The nostrich is perfect - a bit quirky, but very unique, very memorable (which is really the key for marketing - memorable).
I've seen a few ideas on the nostrich theme going around - quite a few are *really* good...I'd be a strong advocate for our purple bird...

Best defense for an EMP IMHO is a Raspberry Pi...drop in maybe a 512 SD card - store your critical info, and drop the whole thing in a small Faraday bag.
Easy, inexpensive, very easy to run it completely headless if needed...
