Elaborate Fragments of Line and Color Transform into Bodies and Landscapes in Lui Ferreyra’s Vibrant Compositions

The deceptively simple power of line and color comes into full force in Lui Ferreyra’s paintings and colored penciled drawings (previously). “I’ve been drawn to the figure and the human face from the beginning,” the artist tells Colossal. “The real subject matter of the work, however, is the breakdown of visual information itself.”

Unearthly Characters Populate Spencer Hansen’s Salvaged Universe

Sporting pinecone-esque suits or masks with gilded antennae, the alien creatures that surface in Spencer Hansen’s Bali workshop appear to be both of this world and not. The artist (previously) recycles familiar, natural materials like wood, fur, and bone, envisioning mysterious but friendly characters with skeletal features and chiseled bodies. Ranging from a few inches high to life-sized, the uncanny sculptures are part of an ever-growing universe salvaged from the scraps of waste materials. More

Puzzle Out Eight Hidden Sea Creatures within Nervous System’s New Jellyfish Dreams Jigsaw

For reasons unclear to us, a group of jellyfish is called a smack, though perhaps its due to the walloping pain produced by an aquatic rendezvous with some jellyfish species. But fear not. Plunge into a dark, nighttime sea with a new puzzle from Nervous System that hides eight marine creatures within an entangled smack of harmless jellyfish. The vibrant jigsaw contains 173 pieces, eight of which are playful whimsies that create a kind of hide-and-seek adventure. More

Approximately 11,000 years ago in Vela, a constellation about 800 light-years away from Earth, a star exploded. The supernova that emerged is the subject of an enormous new composite showcasing what astronomers refer to as a “cosmic corpse” in extraordinary detail.

Plump Water Droplets Spectacularly Appear and Fall into One of Lily Clark’s Sculptures

Although Los Angeles-based artist Lily Clark incorporates stone, wood, and metal into her sculptures, she considers water her primary medium. One of her more recent works, “Dew Point,” explores the supple, plump shape of the life-giving liquid as it condenses and succumbs to gravity. A boxy sculpture with a wide but shallow depression, the superhydrophobic ceramic piece pushes individual droplets to the surface seemingly from nowhere. Each ultimately tumbles down into a slender slit in the middle of the form, before returning to repeat the cycle. More

Remarkable Colors, Textures, and Combinations Characterize László Kupi’s Vibrant Portraits of Minerals

One of the things that makes minerals and crystals so compelling is that we just don’t see them very often. While some like salt, quartz, and mica form on the Earth’s surface, others are found deep within the planet’s crust. From prismatic pillars to cerulean tufts to lime-green nodes, the inorganic growths take myriad forms.

László Kupi has been fascinated by the crystalline structures since childhood, spurring a passion for documenting their remarkable diversity. More

Sixteen Architects Transform Aging Public Toilets in Tokyo into Extraordinarily Inviting Facilities

Whether running errands or visiting the local park, when nature calls, the options can be iffy. In the busy ward of Shibuya City, Tokyo, which attracts visitors for shopping and entertainment, the local administration faced a two-pronged problem: public restrooms have a reputation for being dark, dirty, and off-putting, and people just don’t like to use them. Then Shibuya City government teamed up with The Nippon Foundation and conceived of a way to hit two birds with one stone. More

Emma Bruschi’s Rye Sculptures Celebrate the Humble Elegance of Ancient Harvest Rituals

Rustic elegance meets agricultural ritual in Emma Bruschi’s rye sculptures. Utilizing a traditional long-handled scythe on her family’s farm in Haute-Savoie, Bruschi harvests straw that she weaves and knots into jewelry and “harvest bouquets,” small works that highlight the natural allure of the crop. Many of her designs accentuate the textures and shapes possible within the humble material as it splays outward in tufts and tightly interlaces in rows, evoking ancient symbols of fertility and timeless growth.
