On Black Tuesday, the last day of the stock market crash, bankrupt investor Walter Thornton attempts to sell his luxury Chrysler Imperial 75 Roadster for $100 on the streets of NYC, October 29, 1929.
The Wall Street Crash marked the beginning of the Great Depression which lasted until the late 1930s. During this time, businesses were wiped out and unemployment peaked at 25% in 1933. Al Capone was the first person to open a soup kitchen to feed the poor. His kitchens served three meals a day to ensure that everyone who had lost a job could get a meal. Soon, every city and town had a soup kitchen.
Not everyone experienced misfortune during this time. JFK's father, Joseph Kennedy, realized that it was time to get out of the market when a shoe-shine boy offered him some trading advice. During the Great Depression, Kennedy increased his fortune by investing his money in real estate. In 1929, his net worth was around $4 million ($59.6 million today). By 1935, his wealth had increased to $180 million ($3.36 billion today).

Ships sometimes appear to be floating in the air due to a phenomenon known as a superior mirage. This optical illusion happens because of a temperature inversion, a specific atmospheric condition. Typically, air temperature drops with altitude, but during a temperature inversion, a layer of warmer air sits above a layer of colder air. This inversion causes light rays to bend downward towards the observer's eyes, making it look as though a ship is hovering above the water. While superior mirages are most commonly seen in polar regions, they can occasionally occur in other areas under the right atmospheric conditions.

The Bungle Bungles (also known as Purnululu) not only have an incredible name, they are also one of the continent's most notable landmarks: huge boulders, striped in black and orange, that rise like gigantic ledges in the middle of the desert, in the most northwest of the state. Indigenous peoples inhabited this area for centuries, but very few non-indigenous people were aware of the existence of this region until the 1980s. There are fabulous hiking options, to visit canyons and hidden natural pools. Please note, however, that this natural park is only open in the dry season, usually between April and November.

Oklahoma farmer named Carl Barnes. Barnes, now in his 80s, is half-Cherokee, half Scotch-Irish descent. He began growing older corn varieties in his adult years as a way to reconnect with his heritage.
In growing these older corn varieties, Barnes was able to isolate ancestral types that had been lost to Native American tribes when they were relocated in the 1800s to what is now Oklahoma. This led to an exchange of ancient corn seed with people he had met and made friends with all over the country.
At the same time, Barnes began selecting, saving, and replanting seeds from particularly colourful cobs. According to Barnes, the rainbow seed originally came from a crossing of "Pawnee miniature popcorns with an Osage red flour corn and also another Osage corn called โGreyhorse'."
'Glass Gems,' seen here, was the title that Barnes' protegee and fellow farmer, Greg Schoen came up with for a blue-green and pink-purple corn he grew in 2007.

This is a photo taken in 1950 on KLM. At the time, Martin M-130s, Lockheed Constellations, and Douglas DC-6s operated by airlines such as KLM and the now-defunct Trans World Airlines (TWA) had beds in both the upper and lower berths. These beds featured mattresses, Pullman-style curtains for privacy, windows, reading lights, and even breakfast-in-bed service. At the time, a round-trip economy airfare from New York to London on a Boeing 377 Stratocruiser cost about $580 (about $12,000 today) The baggage racks as we know them today were phased in during the late 1960s and early 1970s
Can you believe the Pantheon has been standing for two thousand years? It still has the biggest unsupported concrete dome in the world! Crazy, right? Hadrian built it around 125 AD on top of an earlier temple by Marcus Agrippa from 27 BC. Itโs seriously impressive and the best-preserved ancient monument in Rome. It's not just a stunning sight, but itโs also super important in the world of architecture. I wonder what kind of ancient engineering secrets it holds!
