should've architected their code better

I get approximately instant compile times because I don't use templates or hundreds of translation units that all need to be linked

It's possible to generally like something and still have criticisms of it. It's ridiculous to pretend that C syntax is perfect.

I don't find assembly difficult at all.

Only because they chose that shitty syntax!

I didn't start using C last week, and this has nothing to do with memory or my understanding of it.

I know I can use both kinds of quotes. I cannot however use them interchangeably, which is the crux of the complaint.

if you pass "A" to a function you're passing a const char pointer

if you pass 'A' you're passing a char literal

I forgot about this silliness and just spent half an hour on it because I thought I was making mistakes with C++ std:string, not being super familiar with the ways C++ might fuck with me

one thing I fucking hate is when a programming language puts meaning on which type of quotes you use

I've seen other people post such things but if I saw something like that I don't know if I would even recognize it; I don't have a clue what a lot of new stuff is even used for, let alone how long it's been around

a few months ago I saw a web dev listing that had like 25 things in its tech stack and I had never even heard of most of them

looking at this L3Harris job listing and they want you to be proficient in multithreaded C and C++ on embedded systems, both bare metal and real time linux, and... web development. junior position by the way

because obviously all software engineers are full stack web developers in addition to whatever their real job is, right

lol fucking delusional

can't find the one image I'm looking for :dementia:

For every guy who pulls off the "contribute to open source" meme successfully, there are a hundred entering the field by just getting a degree.

Yeah, it's *possible* to do it without a degree. But it's a lot easier with one, and when you can pick up a legit BSCS in less than a year for less than $10k, most of which can be covered by pell grants, it's pretty dumb to take the hard road.

it's all coming back to me

not sure that's a good thing tbh

that was more of an "I'm about to do something stupid" pitch than bragging

took me awhile to decide how to do the message server but that's working and now I'm working on the GUI client
