You can use your seed with every wallet. The cold wallet you have stores the private key in an encrypted form while the seed lets you generate this private key.
If you want top notch security, this would be pointless though because the main concern with hardware wallets like ledger etc. is, that they generate the seed for you, using an algorithm. This leads to the problems that you 1) have to trust the company producing these wallets that they don’t scam you and 2) that the algorithm won’t be discovered by a third party, because it would make it easier for them to guess valid seeds.

Unfortunately, restrictions will become inevitable in future. Just wait until the big players will be forced to embrace nostr to not lose their users base. They will try everything they can to build something almost like their closed system.
I am pro opt-in though, I want to have the ability to set it up exactly as I want to use it.

To be honest, I would use an airgapped wallet with a self created key. I only have experience with SeedSigner but it’s one of the best things you can use!
You might tend to chose a super convenient solution like a hardware wallet, but I would recommend to do it the most secure way possible, even if it might appear a little challenging (which it isn’t). You might become more paranoid in future and change it again.
If you decide to use a seedsigner with a self created key, it’s also a nice part of the present to assemble and set it up together.
I used a lot of different methods to secure seeds but this is the best I can think of and still not highly complicated.
