Key Characteristics:

- **Habitat:** Fossas inhabit the forests of Madagascar, both rainforests and dry deciduous forests.

- **Appearance:** They resemble a mix between a cat and a mongoose, with a long body, short legs, and a tail nearly as long as their body. Their fur is usually a reddish-brown to gray color.

- **Size:** Adult fossas can weigh between 5.5 to 8.6 kg (12 to 19 pounds) and measure up to 80 cm (31 inches) in body length, with tails up to 90 cm (35 inches) long.

- **Diet:** Fossas are apex predators in their ecosystem, primarily hunting lemurs but also feeding on rodents, birds, and other small animals.

- **Behavior:** They are solitary and highly territorial animals, with excellent climbing abilities that aid in hunting.
