The instinct is telling you not to create momentary things but only timeless and monumental.

"Fantasy, deprived of reason, produces monsters; united with it, it is the mother of art and the source of its wonders."

F. Goya

According to some inexplicable and inexorable law, the person commissioning a portrait does everything in their power to resist the talent of the artist they themselves have chosen.

A person very rarely sees themselves as they truly are, and even if they do know themselves, they are unpleasantly surprised when the artist truthfully captures their appearance.

They wish to be portrayed in the most impersonal and banal manner, as an official or secular puppet. Their personality must be completely absorbed by their position and status in society. The prosecutor is interested only in his gown, and the general in his gold-embroidered uniform.

They don’t care whether the artist delves into their soul. Hence the success of mediocre portraitists and sculptors, who limit themselves to conveying only the external, banal aspects of their subjects, along with their official poses and superficial expressions.

If the artist, like a photographer, reproduces only the external features, if they merely trace lines without relating them to the overall character, then their work does not deserve attention.

The artist should primarily seek spiritual likeness in the features of the face – that is the essence of their work. In short, the features must be expressive, revealing the soul of the model... the artist's task is to separate truth from falsehood.

In art, everything that is insincere, artificial, everything that aspires to appear beautiful and grand but is not characteristic, everything that is shallow, refined, that smiles without reason, that flirts unnecessarily, that boasts and pretends without foundation – all of it is falsehood.

When an artist, in an attempt to "beautify," depicts spring as greener, dawn as pinker, young lips as more crimson, they create ugliness because they lie.

When they soften the grimace of suffering, the grayness of old age, when they smooth out nature, sweeten it, embellish it, or temper it to please the audience, they create ugliness because they fear the truth.

I'd say you're onto something there. Who needs to follow the teachings, when all you have to do is repent?! If you think you were born by the all loving and divine as a lowly a sinner, what can you do, but sin?

Who needs to work on anything when ultimately all you have to do is submit to the system?

IMO, it's best to focus on embodying the teachings of the great masters and drop the system organized around the dregs they left behind.

A short anecdote..

Duke Hwan and the Wheelwright

Taken from a text called "The Way of Chuang Tzu" as translated by the philosopher-monk Thomas Merton:

Duke Hwan of Khi,

First in his dynasty,

Sat under his canopy

Reading his philosophy;

And Phien the wheelwright

Was out in the yard

Making a wheel.

Phien laid aside

Hammer and chisel,

Climbed the steps,

And said to Duke Hwan:

"May I ask you , Lord,

What is this you are

Reading?"

The Duke said:

"The experts. The Authorities."

And Phien asked:

"Alive or Dead?"

"Dead a long time."

"Then," said the wheelwright,

"You are reading only

The dirt they left behind."

Then the Duke replied:

"What do you know about it?

You are only a wheelwright.

You had better give me a good explanation

Or else you must die."

The Wheelwright said:

"Let us look at the affair

From my point of view.

When I make wheels

If I go easy, they fall apart,

If I am too rough, they do not fit.

If I am neither too easy not too violent

They come out right. The work is what

I want it to be.

You cannot put this into words"

You just have to know how it is.

I cannot even tell my own son exactly how it is done,

And my own son cannot learn it from me.

So here I am, seventy years old,

Still making wheels!

The men of old

Took all they really knew

With them to the grave.

And so, Lord, what you are reading there

is only the dirt they left behind them."

"The deepest truth of all time and my daily thoughts when I am hammering metal in my studio."

My old studio, I loved creating there...
