Brit who became German and is moving to France. Runs the #CrossBorderRail project and writes about railways and EU politics. Politically green, lives happily without a car. Normally found stuck on a train or stuck in a village in Bourgogne, or escaping either on a folding bicycle. Toots mostly in EN, einige auf DE, parfois en FR.

We have the data, journey planner and the contracts to sell all involved carriers. Currently working on the technical integration for sales. Here’s the same search on Railfinder:

There is even a direct train (because in France your town does not really exist without a direct train to Paris). I think that basically all of France is max 1 change away from Paris.

Geopolitics had the Schleswig Holstein Question

Machine intelligence has the Turing Test

And here we have the passenger railway equivalent - the VALENCE-ARMENTIÈRES PROBLEM

What the problem is, and why no one solves it currently, explained 👇

Thank you, taking note!

Zurich-Zagreb doesn't seem that far that a night train would do much good time-wise; likely spends hours stopped somewhere in the middle of the night.

But there your problem is… 🥁 Paris-Milano. You cannot get to Paris from London early enough, and so that makes getting to Ancona a total pain.

Not sure what the hell the conclusion is for you here though! Buy an Interrail and make a bit of an adventure out of it?

And having checked with contacts, there’ll be a Zagreb-Split every night, and Bratislava-Wien-Split and Budapest-Split each a couple of nights a week this summer. None very useful.

Not speaking French, I can never find Liège without first googling which way the accent goes.

(They find both Lüttich and Luik, but then they leave out the Guillemins bit, so you don’t know whether that’s right either.)

(And yes, this is all kinds of backwards but there you go.)

I am missing a "hipmunk" website (a now defunct air travel website) that aggregates all train operators across all countries and lists all options by time and price.

Re. seasonal night trains - let me check for you what some friends in the industry reckon will run! Be aware though the line to Split is diesel only, and hellish slow though

nostr:nprofile1qy2hwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnddaehgu3wwp6kyqpqdt339ahlahmsy4z258nrhcqg9q4lajadh396xftvsjdphxtk435qn3naah (but putting it bluntly: there are limits to the data nostr:nprofile1qy2hwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnddaehgu3wwp6kyqpq7q4accvk0ckcxadxkp73z2v6as7s5mj2kng947dlm9den70fe32s3pv25x can get, and at what cost, meaning currently it cannot solve a problem like this better than anyone else can, sadly)

So let's call this the “Valence - Armentières Problem”

If and when someone builds *the* perfect rail app of the future, it ought to be able to route me correctly AND sell me tickets for this one!

I am looking for a way to go from London to Split, Croatia in about 1 day by train, and the Venice sleeper train holds so much promise, perhaps by changing trains in Innsbruck rather than going all the way to Venice.

Eurostar London-Paris

TGV Lyria Paris-Zürich

EuroNight Zürich-Zagreb

HZPP IC Zagreb-Split

But having done all of those... damn it's painful

When in the year do you want to attempt this? There might be other summertime sleeper trains that do a better job.
