I speak about climate futures, mitigation and adaptation in the face of the climate crisis. 🇿🇦

Watching the sun set

NOAA released their March 2023 El Niño forecast. The highlights from this are that the La Niña has officially ended and we are now headed into ENSO-neutral conditions with early signs of the El Niño forming A-M-J.

They do say the following:

“ However, it is possible that strong warming near South America may portend a more rapid evolution toward El Niño and will be closely monitored.”

Full bulletin here: https://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/analysis_monitoring/enso_advisory/ensodisc.pdf

The reason we are watching the development of the El Niño closely are the projections from many scientists on the impact of this event. Eg Hansen et al:

“Even a little futz of an El Nino – like the tropical warming in 2018-19, which barely qualified as an El Nino – should be sufficient for record global temperature. A classical, strong El Nino in 2023-24 could push global temperature to about +1.5°C relative to the 1880-1920 mean, which is our estimate of preindustrial temperature.”

My reaction was an “error” - happens all the time. I’m left handed but use my right thumb to scroll and inevitably hit the 🤙🏻 on notes! The ⚡️now being far right has helped a little but still 🤦🏻‍♂️

Oh man I have an interesting story for you. A few months back our small adult cat, who likes to sit on our balcony early evenings, had a close encounter with an owl. The first fly past we thought was out of curiosity, but the second fly past we realised was an attempt to take her out!

Do owls attack and eat cats we asked?

Ummm…

“an owl attacking your cat is still a distinct possibility. The best method is avoidance, and if you see or hear any owls in your area, it’s best to keep your cat locked up inside at night.”

Riddle we this…

So logged into #[0] with the same relay set as in Damus. Made an update in iris and it shows on profile

However, when looking at my profile in Damus the note is not there. 🤔

Why would this be?

(Am linking to the note here to see if I can read it in Damus. #[1])

What you are looking at here is the 2m temperature anomaly projected for parts of China tomorrow March 9th. Of course this has alarm bells ringing as a result of the record breaking 74-day heatwave experienced in China in August of last year.

China is the world second largest economy and the events of last summer was a warning shot across the bow. (You can read more about this here. https://www.thehindu.com/news/international/how-bad-its-china-drought-and-heatwave-explained/article65809328.ece)

Supply chain disruption is going to be one of the issues we have to contend with as we continue to heat.

Satellites now play a crucial role in our understanding of what is causing CO2 & CH4 to rise.

Analysing satellite data for last year the team at Kayrros (https://www.kayrros.com) identified 1,005 CH4 super-emitter events in 2022, of which 559 were from oil and gas fields, 105 from coalmines, and 340 from waste sites, such as landfills.

These are pictured here:

You are looking at the storm that now holds the new record for being the longest lasting tropical cyclone since records began.

Current duration 33 days. (Previous record Typhoon John which lasted 31 days)

#CycloneFreddy is projected to reach Mozambique for a second time on day 37. (March 12th)

#[0]- saw you comment on a Nostr thread on Mastodon and thought I would connect here too.

We’ve had our share here too! Lots of lightning which is very unusual for these parts.

We have had a few thunderstorms move through. The scene in between the storm cells…

Wow check this out. Tropical #CycloneFreddy slammed into the east coast of Madagascar on Feb 21st then passed over land into the Mozambique Channel where it gathered some strength and then made landfall in Mozambique a week later on Friday Feb 24.

But it’s now back in the Mozambique Channel heading back towards Madagascar to make landfall on Sunday March 5th — but this time on the west coast!

For the Nostr piece:

Nostr is a system that allows people to share notes and other things with each other in a way that's secure and private. There are two main parts to the system: clients and relays.

Each person who uses Nostr has a client program on their computer or phone that they use to send and receive notes. These clients are identified by a special code called a public key, which is like a digital ID.

There are also relays, which are servers that help people send and receive notes. Anyone can run a relay, and there can be lots of them.

When you send a note in Nostr, your client program adds a digital signature to it, kind of like signing your name. When someone else receives your note, their client program checks the signature to make sure it really came from you and hasn't been tampered with.

To follow someone on Nostr, you just tell your client program to look for notes from their public key. Your client program will then check with the relays you've chosen to see if there are any new notes from that person.

The relays don't talk to each other, so they can't see what notes are being sent between clients. This helps keep things private and secure.

😅🤷🏻‍♂️
