The Advent
The Catechism of the Catholic Church speaks of the season saying (Paragraph 524):
When the Church celebrates the liturgy of Advent each year, she makes present this ancient expectancy of the Messiah, for by sharing in the long preparation for the Savior's first coming, the faithful renew their ardent desire for his second coming. By celebrating the precursor's birth and martyrdom, the Church unites herself to his desire: "He must increase, but I must decrease."
Fourth Sunday of Advent:
Therefore the Lord himself will give you this sign: the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:14)Lord, our God, we praise You for Your Son, Jesus Christ, for He is Emmanuel, the Hope of all people.
He is the Wisdom that teaches and guides us.
He is the Savior of us all.
O Lord,
let your blessing come upon us as we light all candles of this wreath.
May the wreath and its light be a sign of Christ's promise of salvation.
May He come quickly and not delay.
We ask this in His holy name. Amen.
Christmas Novena:
During the last nine days of Advent, Catholics can take part in the Christmas novena. Beginning on December 16th and ending on Christmas Eve, this prayer can help prepare one's heart for the Nativity of the Lord:
Hail, and blessed be the hour and moment
At which the Son of God was born
Of a most pure Virgin
At a stable at midnight in Bethlehem
In the piercing cold
At that hour vouchsafe, I beseech Thee,
To hear my prayers and grant my desires (mention request here)
Through Jesus Christ and His most Blessed Mother

“Hoje sabereis que o Senhor virá, e amanhã vereis a sua glória.”
Nos tempos antigos preparavam-se os fiéis para as grandes solenidades, passando a noite anterior, ou parte dela, em oração e cânticos, jejuando e fazendo penitência. Chamaram-se vigília a essas práticas noturnas e esse nome foi conservado, quando, mais tarde, essas práticas de penitência foram feitas durante o dia que precede à festa. Na medida de nossas condições pessoais e por conseguinte, da participação a essas penitências, colheremos também frutos mais ou menos abundantes destas solenidades.
Maria Santíssima, guiou os nossos passos durante o Tempo do Advento. É justo que reunidos em sua igreja (Statio), junto do presépio, esperemos com ela o Salvador.
Entre todas as vigílias, as do Natal e Páscoa têm sido sempre as mais caras ao espírito cristão, por serem as mais significativas para a vida religiosa e espiritual. Eis os motivos porque, os fiéis, nestes dias, não devem perder o ensejo de assistir ao santo Sacrifício da Missa.
Com as palavras com que Moisés anunciou ao povo, no deserto, a chuva do maná (pão, que era uma figura da Eucaristia), anuncia-nos a Igreja, no Introito, a vinda do Senhor.
Este Senhor é o verdadeiro Maná, verdadeiro Deus e verdadeiro homem (Epístola), nascido da Virgem Maria por virtude do Espírito Santo (Evangelho). No Ofertório da santa Missa vamos ao encontro do Rei da Glória e Ele se revelará a todos os corações na santa Comunhão. E se assim, de ano em ano, O esperamos com alegria como Redentor, também poderemos esperá-Lo com muita confiança como Juiz que há de vir. É o que pedimos na Oração.
OBS.: Esta Missa se reza durante o dia. A partir das 18 horas já se pode rezar a Missa da Noite de Natal (Missa do Galo).

An Italian priest named Father Charles Vachetta is credited with writing a novena in 1721 to inspire his parishioners during Advent. Today, that novena is known as the “Christmas novena.”
The nine-day prayer begins on Dec. 16 and concludes on Christmas Eve. Drawing from the Psalms and Old Testament prophecies foretelling the coming of the Messiah, the novena includes a daily Scripture reading, a meditation, an antiphon, the Magnificat, intercessions, and a closing prayer.
Vachetta, the pastor of the Church of the Immaculate in Turin, Italy, also composed an included canticle, or hymn, called “Let the Heavens Be Glad.”
