In the context of using bip85 (as above) I'd say it's a pretty good idea. If it's a single signer then it depends how confident you are that the seed phrase is in a secure location where it won't be compromised. Finally, if it's part of a multisig then I would say it's too much complication at that point.

When in doubt, keep it simple to prevent locking yourself out. When using a passphrase, keep a physical copy of it separate from the seed phrase & device so you can refer to it if you need to.

Use a very simple pass phrase that you memorize and store in a password manager. You can call it a single point of failure, but that's hardly an issue if the chance of failure is close to zero for the wallet owner.

On the other hand no pass phrase leads to a very significant single point of failure in your seed phrase.

There will be very few situations in your life where having a pass phrase might matter, and you can use other methods to obtain the same effective result.

With that said, I’ve used one before, and there are circumstances where it might make sense. Security must be managed at an individual level.

Yes on BIP39 unless you really want to geek out on building your own entropy. You could end up making a mistake somewhere and that could be a disaster. I’ve never used it as just a signing device, but I don’t have any concerns about its physical security.

if this is your first time playing with these wallets then test them out and get comfortable first, send, receive, and restore

I'm not a fan of passphrases because they result in a brittle 2-of-2 setup. If you lose either the seed phrase or the password, you lose access to your funds.
