Life is hiking up to a summit
Full of false peaks of knowledge and aptitude
Once reached one find themselves better than before
But the sight of the next peak leaves us realizing there's more
Let our egos not grow in this moment of achievement
For the weather may turn on our way up that hill
We may be pushed back, forced to take shelter
Let us be prepared for these moments and grateful still
Realize how far we've come and prepare to push on
As we climb ever higher the big picture becomes clear
And we realize how small our experience is amongst it all
We look back at our younger selves so confident and strong
Now we're tired but must plod along
At the top, the real summit, we sit and ponder
Wiser, full of awe, and a sadness our journey is coming to a close
As the sun sets we retrace our steps one last time
Taking in all the sights and smells and sounds but with a slowness
A renewed appreciation, a humble recognition
The journey ends where it all began
Let us go peacefully through this life
And be mindful what traces we leave behind
I will never give this place up
