Is there a way to run a KDE Plasma distro like Fedora entirely in RAM from a boot disk to watch HDR content?

submitted by https://lemm.ee/u/hakase

I’ve been using Linux Mint exclusively for a year and a half now, and I’ve gotten pretty used to the ecosystem, but I don’t want to have to wait another year for them to implement HDR support for video playback. I also don’t want to go through the effort of fully swapping distros (don’t have time to completely reorganize my workflow at the moment, etc.).

Does anyone have a recommendation for a distro that I could run in RAM from a USB stick with an up-to-date version of KDE Plasma or another DE when I want to watch HDR movies?

Or, if I’m overthinking this and there’s another obvious, simpler solution, please feel free to let me know that as well.

How do you think smartphone manufacturers will comply with EU's replaceable battery regulation?

submitted by https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/u/IDKWhatUsernametoPutHereLolol

I have a feeling they’re gonna charge like $200 to $400 more then blame the regulators.

What's your favourite classic movie you think everyone should have seen once in their life?

submitted by https://piefed.jeena.net/u/jeena

Me and two friends had “classic movie nights” for a couple of years before I moved away. We would watch something which is considered a classic and it had to have been released before 2000. We watched only those which none of us three have seen before and we would watch it like once every two months or so. Movies like:

M

Gone with the Wind

The Godfather

Taxi Driver

Murder on the Orient Express

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

Rear Window

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

Chinatown

Le Grande Bouffe

L’Avventura

Tengoku to jigoku

etc.

It was a ton of fun and we talked about the movie before, what our expectations are and after just generally and each of us would give it a IMDB star rating.

Now sadly my friends live 9 time zones away, so we can’t really do that anymore. But I was thinking to try to convince my wife to do this classic movies night with me. Right now she is reluctant because English is her 4rth language and especially older movies are using language differently too, but one day she will give in :D.

Anyway, now that you know the rules, what movies do you think I still missed and should watch?

submitted by https://fedia.io/u/KayLeadfoot

Between January 10 and January 12, after being warned that an EV rebate program was running out of funds, Tesla dealerships in Canada managed to claim 8,669 individual iZEV EV rebates, or about $43 million CAD in incentives. That’s a staggering number of sales to log in a single weekend, about 1.5 sales per minute. Let’s dig into the numbers.

Canadians drop their politeness in the wake of Trump's tariffs

submitted by https://lemmy.world/u/MicroWave

Summary

Trump’s new 25% tariffs on Canadian goods, along with threats of more on lumber and dairy, have sparked widespread backlash in Canada.

Canadians are boycotting American products, canceling U.S. trips, and rallying around “Buy Canadian” efforts. Ontario has banned U.S. liquor sales, and Premier Doug Ford threatened to cut electricity exports.

British Columbia’s premier vowed national unity against the tariffs. The federal government launched a $5 billion aid program for affected businesses.

Many Canadians see the tariffs as a betrayal and reject Trump’s taunts about making Canada the 51st state.

[ App Store Update ] Mlem 2.0 is here!

submitted by https://lemmy.ml/u/ericbandrews

After a year in development and six months in beta, we are thrilled to announce that Mlem for Lemmy 2.0 is available on the App Store!

We’ve rewritten the app from the ground up–it’s still the same Mlem our users know and love, but with significant performance improvements, a set of new features that were infeasible in our v1 app, and a fresh new design that feels right at home with the latest versions of iOS. There are more changes than we could list here, so the best way to see what’s new is to just https://apps.apple.com/us/app/mlem-for-lemmy/id6450543782

, but some of the highlights include:

Media Enhancements

2.0 ships with a brand new image viewer and full support for gifs, videos, and animated webps. We’ve even added loops.video embedding–link posts to loops.video will display the linked video directly in Mlem.

Color Themes

In addition to the standard light and dark, Mlem 2.0 offers OLED, Solarized, and Dracula color themes, with more on the way. If you’d like us to support your favorite theme, let us know!

Markdown Handling

Powered by our https://github.com/mlemgroup/LemmyMarkdownUI

, Mlem 2.0 supports the full range of Lemmydown syntax.

Enhanced Post Composer

You can now create crossposts directly in the post editor (+ -> Crosspost), and can even post to multiple communities from multiple accounts at once. The keyboard now also sports a comprehensive set of Markdown editing tools.

French Localization

Mlem is now available in French, thanks to https://github.com/pylapp

.

And More…

Guest mode: you can now browse instances without an account

Added a new Tiled post layout

Keep place on switch: you can now switch accounts without reloading the app. This behavior can be toggled in Settings -> Accounts or accessed by long pressing an account in the account switcher.

You can now search for posts and comments

Compatibility Notice: Mlem 2.0 supports iOS 17 and later. If you are on an older iOS, you won’t be able to download this update but will be able to continue using the previous version of Mlem.

Thank you to all of our beta testers, whose feedback and support has been invaluable.

Cheers,

Witches' Moonlit Walk

submitted by https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/u/Even_Adder

) (2025)

Image description: A twilight scene, dominated by a grand castle with elegant spires and turrets perched atop a hill illuminated by the glow of a full moon. The sky is a swirl of pink and purple hues, and in the foreground, three witches cloaked in dark garments are seen walking purposefully along a stone bridge with arched supports that spans a deep gorge. Nestled along the cliffside below the bridge is a small, weathered house, which enhances the setting.

Full Generation Parameters:

Medieval aqueduct between the castle and the cliff. The castle is located on the cliff. On the opposite side is a forest and small huts. There are 3 young witches walking along the top of the aqueduct. The witches wear pointed hats and cloaks. Some are holding books in their hands. In the background is an eerie magical castle. magic is in the air. Mania emanates from the witches. The setting sun can be seen through the columns of the aqueduct. The contrast between the rich colors of the magic and sky and the gloomy castle and silhouettes. The surrealness of the magical landscape. A world of magic. Colorful modern impressionism. Your stance on (non-European) foundations

submitted by https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/u/Blaze

I’m curious what your stance on using products and services from non-European foundations is.

The https://feddit.org/post/8902548

made me think about your acceptance of open source products or free services from no-European, or even US American, foundations (The Open Document Foundartion is registerd germany, though).

Mozilla data privacy controversy aside my thought would for example apply to

Apache Software Foundation (OpenOffice)

Mozilla Foundation (Firefox, Thunderbird, …)

Signal foundation (Signal)

to name the biggest.

For me the use of non-commercial or even open-source products and services from different non-European countries is okay, as they are funded by donations.

The whole idea of buyFromEU seems to funnel money into the own economy in order to have a strong market, and also to proudly use European products. The above mentioned foundations help to increase data sovereignty and after all break loose from commercial solutions that aim at deep integrations and walled gardens.

"Age verification laws do far more than ‘protect children online’—they require the creation of a system that collects vast amounts of personal information from everyone. Instead of making the internet

submitted by https://tldr.nettime.org/users/remixtures

"Age verification laws do far more than ‘protect children online’—they require the creation of a system that collects vast amounts of personal information from everyone. Instead of making the internet safer for children, these laws force all users—regardless of age—to verify their identity just to access basic content or products. This isn’t a mistake; it’s a deliberate strategy. As one sponsor of age verification bills in Alabama admitted, “I knew the tough nut to crack that social media would be, so I said, ‘Take first one bite at it through pornography, and the next session, once that got passed, then go and work on the social media issue.’” In other words, they recognized that targeting porn would be an easier way to introduce these age verification systems, knowing it would be more emotionally charged and easier to pass. This is just the beginning of a broader surveillance system disguised as a safety measure.

This alarming trend is already clear, with the growing creep of age verification bills filed in the first month of the 2025-2026 state legislative session. Consider these three bills:”
