Diving into daily driving Linux

submitted by https://lemm.ee/u/Parptarf

As some of you already know I’ve been playing around on a small partition with Linux Mint. Learned basic troubleshooting and fixed some driver issues.

Now I’m very impressed with how it runs and decided to daily Linux and keep Windows for things Linux can’t do. Currently installing Windows on a new small SSD as we speak. (240Gb for the OS plus it’s gonna get a 500GB NTFS partition on my 2TB gaming drive)

This brings me to my question. Which Distro?

I’ve narrowed it down to keep using Mint or Fedora KDE Plasma 41. Mint is something I’ve already screwed around with and there’s loads of guides online about it.

But Fedora seems like a better for for me. I’m not afraid of tinkering at all. But as long as I came game and daily it for browsing, emails etc. without too much issues, I’m good.

What’s the consensus? Setting it up tonight after my new W11 install is up and running.

Elon Musk’s DOGE Is Getting Audited

submitted by https://lemmy.world/u/MicroWave

Summary

Congress’ Government Accountability Office (GAO) has been auditing Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) since March over concerns about unauthorized access to sensitive data across federal agencies.

DOGE operatives—many tied to Musk’s companies and lacking government experience—have infiltrated agencies like Labor, Treasury, and Social Security, raising alarms over privacy violations and system integrity.

GAO is examining DOGE’s access levels, policy compliance, and potential misuse of data.

Lawmakers call it a “constitutional emergency,” citing fears of data consolidation, inadequate oversight, and threats to public trust and cybersecurity in the Trump administration.

Fund managers worry Trump might be “insane”

submitted by https://lemmy.world/u/MicroWave

Summary

As Trump’s erratic tariff policy rattles global markets, investors and financial analysts are questioning his mental fitness.

Tom Lee of FSInsights said macro fund managers fear the White House is “not acting rationally, but rather on ideology,” with some even wondering if “the President might be insane.”

Lee placed full blame on Trump, saying his decisions lead to a “binary outcome,” though they often lack logic.

Market volatility surged after Trump raised tariffs on China to 125% before having to abruptly pause most tariffs.

US marshals were mobilized to warn fired DOJ lawyer over congressional testimony, attorney says

submitted by https://lemmy.world/u/arotrios

Summary:

The U.S. Justice Department dispatched armed U.S. marshals to deliver a letter warning a fired career pardon attorney about testifying to congressional Democrats, her lawyer said in a letter seen by Reuters on Monday.

“This highly unusual step of directing armed law enforcement officers to the home of a former Department of Justice employee who has engaged in no misconduct, let alone criminal conduct, simply to deliver a letter, is both unprecedented and completely inappropriate,” Michael Bromwich, a lawyer representing fired pardon attorney Liz Oyer, wrote to the Justice Department.

The Marshals were called off on Friday only after Oyer acknowledged receiving the letter, once she located it in a secondary email that she had not been using to communicate with the department’s human resources officials, Bromwich wrote.

While U.S. Marshals deputies are sometimes used to serve congressional subpoenas or protect witnesses, dispatching them to deliver a letter from the Justice Department is unusual, one former official said.

A Justice Department spokesman did not comment.

Oyer, who served as the pardon attorney during President Joe Biden’s tenure, was one of several career officials fired by Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche on March 7.

Oyer has since told U.S. media outlets that her firing came shortly after she declined to recommend restoring gun rights to actor Mel Gibson, a supporter of President Donald Trump.

She was one of several Justice Department officials who testified on Monday afternoon before a hearing organized by Democrats in the House of Representatives and Senate about the Trump administration’s treatment of the Justice Department and law firms who act in cases disliked by the Republican president.

Go Read Carney's Book

submitted by https://lemmy.ca/u/Thepotholeman

As the title says, you NEED to go read this guy’s book if you were ever unsure about who he is as a person and if he is progressive. I started reading this yesterday and am almost a third of the way through already. The way he explains markets and economics and how they can be utilized to fight climate change and our biggest issues is fascinating.

So far I can see that this man is legit and he wants to see Canada leading the world economically and morally. We have a golden opportunity here and any fiscal conservative should see this guy as the number one guy for the job. We had our time with Trudeau laying the foundation for a lot of social justice for the next quarter century, and now Carney is here to focus more on the economy and scale it to make us a global super power. Never before have I found economics so interesting and this book of his is really opening my eyes about the history and functions of markets.

Ok, off I go to continue!

Republican senator floats using violence against journalists who report 'fake news'

submitted by https://lemmy.world/u/MicroWave

Summary

Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) posted a video suggesting journalists would report “less false stories” if violence were still used to resolve disputes.

He referenced the 1890 Capitol shooting of Rep. William Taulbee by reporter Charles Kincaid, who was acquitted.

After backlash, Mullin claimed he was joking and criticized The Oklahoman for covering the story.

A former MMA fighter, Mullin had previously threatened a union leader in a Senate hearing. Critics say his remarks echo Trump’s escalating “fake news” rhetoric and hostility toward the press.
