Got my first spring planting in! Probably get killed by frost, but hey!

submitted by https://lemmy.world/u/SchmidtGenetics

Still not out of the woods for frost, but I transplanted the non hardened broom corn and planted some more seeds with them. I also transplanted a couple Marigold and Nasturtium starts with some seeds as well.

I left some space between the tall ornamental grasses as I’ve gotten a cold frame to install on the block above this narrow bed.

US consumer sentiment sees largest drop since 1990 after Trump tariff chaos

submitted by https://europe.pub/u/tfm

Experts warn of slowing economy after score based on Americans’ financial outlooks fell by 32% since January

US consumer sentiment plummeted in April after Donald Trump’s trade war threw the global economy into chaos, according to a new report.

The index of consumer sentiment, a score based on a monthly survey asking Americans about their financial outlooks, fell by 32% since January – the largest drop since the 1990 recession, according to the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research.

“Expectations worsened for vast swaths of the population across age, education income and political affiliation,” said Joanne Hsu, director of the surveys of consumers, in a statement. “Consumers perceived risks to multiple aspects of the economy, in large part due to ongoing uncertainty around trade policy and the potential for a resurgence of inflation looming ahead.”

UK wildlife under threat as 88% of people concerned about decline

submitted by https://feddit.uk/u/GreyShuck

One in three Brits had admitted to doing nothing to support or protect struggling UK wildlife - despite nearly 9 in 10 saying they’re worried about its decline.

According to a British Wildlife Insights 2025 report, compiled by biodiversity and ecology consultants Arbtech, nearly a third of Brits are taking no action to help wildlife in their local areas.

33% of participants said they took no action to support wildlife, with a further 13% say they had no plans to ever take action. This was despite 88% of participants reporting to be concerned about the ongoing reduction of wildlife in the UK

How we could survive in a post-collapse world

submitted by https://lemm.ee/u/eleitl

Abstract

The potential for societal collapse has become a pressing concern as the impacts of climate change intensify, threatening global stability. This paper explores the multifaceted risks of collapse, emphasizing the interconnected environmental, economic, and geopolitical pressures that contribute to vulnerability. By examining historical collapses, such as those of the Roman Empire and the Maya civilization, alongside contemporary examples like Syria, Venezuela, and Yemen, the paper highlights the unique challenges of the current global crisis. Unlike past localized collapses, today’s climate crisis is unprecedented in its speed and scale, raising critical questions about the adaptability of modern societies. The study proposes adaptive strategies, including fostering local self-sufficiency, building resilient community networks, and embracing uncertainty as central to survival in a deeply altered world. It argues that while historical lessons provide valuable insights, new approaches are needed to navigate the complexities of the Anthropocene. Ultimately, the paper underscores the urgency of reimagining societal resilience to confront an era defined by profound environmental upheaval and uncertainty.
