Trump signs proclamation to restrict foreign student visas at Harvard
submitted by https://lemmy.world/u/MicroWave
US president says it would jeopardize national security to allow university to keep hosting international students
Donald Trump signed a proclamation to restrict foreign student visas at Harvard University, the White House said on Wednesday.
The order would suspend for an initial six months the entry into the US of foreign nationals seeking to study or participate in exchange programs at Harvard. Trump declared that it would jeopardize national security to allow Harvard to continue hosting foreign students.
The proclamation is the US president’s latest attempt to choke the Ivy League school from an international pipeline that accounts for a quarter of the student body, and a further escalation in the White House’s fight with the institution.

US immigration officials push for increased detentions, including ‘collateral’ arrests
submitted by https://lemmy.world/u/MicroWave
Ice officers encouraged to ‘push the envelope’ with arrests, including of undocumented people encountered by chance
Senior US immigration officials over the weekend instructed rank-and-file officers to “turn the creative knob up to 11” when it comes to enforcement, including by interviewing and potentially arresting people they called “collaterals”, according to internal agency emails viewed by the Guardian.
Officers were also urged to increase apprehensions and think up tactics to “push the envelope” one email said, with staff encouraged to come up with new ways of increasing arrests and suggesting them to superiors.
“If it involves handcuffs on wrists, it’s probably worth pursuing,” another message said.

Why are eink devices so unaffordable?
submitted by https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/u/ThisIsAManWhoKnowsHowToGling
So, Ive recently gotten back into writing and been thinking about how much more fun it would be to write Outside. Problem is, the sun hates screens. I have an Alphawrite Neo, of course, but I’ve always been insecure about lugging a weird educational device around with me in public. So I started looking into Eink tablets that could be used with a keyboard and

Jesus H. Christ, that price tag!
I just want something to type on something. Apparently thats strange, so maybe there will be something cheaper as just a word processor. It seems that the only reasonable offering here is the Freewrite Traveler, though, so I look it up and

WHY‽ It’s the same price!
Okay, maybe I could just get a Raspberry Pi 400 and attach an eInk monitor to it. Apparently, this is not the usual use-case for E-ink, but there are in fact e-ink monitors out there! Most were around a thousand dollars for some reason, but here is the cheapest one I could find:

That’s around the price point of a Boox Go, for reference, which has a really slow screen refresh rate.
Why is there no affordable e-paper products that arent a pain to use? I am aware of cheaper ones, but the ones ive seen reviews if aren’t able to keep up with typing in a way that seems responsive. And I’m aware that you can find eink displays (as in the component) for as low as $30, so they should be able to be cheaper than this!

“archive.today” sends user data to Russia
A translation of https://steigerlegal.ch/2024/05/05/archive-today-russland/
with a few (minor additions). I could not find an English-language article. The original article has informative illustrations.
“Archive.Today” is a popular website for access to paid media content. Well-known domain names for the website are archive.is and archive.ph (and archive.md).
What many users do not know: The website provides users’ data to Russia.
The data goes to Mail.ru and thus to the Russian Internet company VK. A look at the website with Webbkoll shows the following Russian domain names:
privacy-cs.mail.ru
r.mradx.net
rs.mail.ru
top-fwz1.mail.ru
First and foremost, top-fwz1.mail.ru/js/code.js is integrated. Further code from Russia is then loaded.
The following applies to Russian Internet companies:
“Russia demands unconditional cooperation and extensive control options from its flourishing IT economy. It is not just about the full possession of the largest social network (VK) and the largest payment service (Mail.ru), but in the case of Yandex also to influence the entire output of Yandex News.
The data collected show which Paywall content is particularly popular in western media, but could also provide insight about their users. One can speculate about the importance of such data in the hybrid Russian war against Europe and the rest of the West.
Incidentally, anyone who pays for the paid media content https://www.republik.ch/2023/11/02/blick-tx-group-und-nzz-schickten-leserdaten-nach-moskau

«Until recently, Ringier sent - thanks to these cookies - the IP addresses of “Blick” readers to the Russian tech company Yandex. […] Yandex is also listed at «20 Minuten». The free news portsal of the TX Group also works with the platform of the Interactive Advertising Bureau. […] The NZZ also sent data to the east. The traditional company on Falkenstrasse has integrated dozens of trackers, including from Yandex and also from Rutarget, an advertising company that belongs to the Russian Sberbank, is fully controlled by the state and is on the sanction list of the United States. »
The operators of «Archive.Today» do not open their identity. Neither an impressum nor a data protection declaration can be found on the website.
“Liberapay” in France should be able to say who operates “archive.today”. If you click on the “Donate” button at “Archive.Today”, you will be forwarded to the donation platform “Liberapay”.
A (more) reputable alternative is the Internet Archive at Archive.org, best known for the archiving of websites at web.archive.org.

Ukraine to make 10 million air, land, sea drones a year
submitted by https://lemmy.world/u/MicroWave
At the forefront of combat drone technology and production, Ukraine’s UAVs account for 80% of battlefield engagements – and total number will soon grow significantly, says Kyiv.
Ukraine has made significant progress in the development of its drone industry and now has the capacity to produce up to 10 million drones annually.
Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue security forum in Singapore, Deputy Defense Minister Oleksandr Kozenko stated that Ukrainian drones are considerably cheaper than other combat UAVs and have already been battle-tested.
“Ukraine has taken its drone sector to a new level, developing innovative solutions not only in the air, but also on land and at sea. Today, our defense industry has the capability to manufacture 10 million drones of various types per year,” he said.
