Playing Nine Sols has further reinforced my position that making games excessively difficult is gay. Nobody likes a cakewalk but if the game requires lots of dying just to get through on normal, it's not something to fawn over. That one run of the hard boss fight where you barely pull off the win isn't enough to make up for the 20 attempts that preceded it. I don't respect your game enough to memorize every detail of every hitbox.
A better design philosophy for a game is to focus on making the gameplay fun. Groundbreaking and insane, I know. Just appeal to the power fantasy and most gamers will be happy. They might not even realize it but that's the secret sauce. Games are about a rush and being able to do things you can't do in reality.
