What happened in tienmen Square in June 4th 1989?
On June 4th, 1989, a massacre took place in Tiananmen Square, Beijing, China. The Chinese government sent troops and tanks to the square to forcibly remove the pro-democracy protesters who had been gathering there for several weeks.
The protests had started in mid-April 1989, with students and intellectuals calling for greater political freedom and an end to corruption. The protesters were joined by workers, farmers, and other citizens, and the movement grew rapidly, with demonstrations spreading to other cities in China.
On the night of June 3rd, the government declared martial law and ordered the military to clear the square. The protesters refused to leave and the military used force to disperse them, resulting in a violent confrontation. Tanks rolled into the square, firing on unarmed protesters and crushing them under their treads. Many were beaten or shot by soldiers.
The exact number of casualties is unknown, but it is estimated that hundreds or even thousands of people were killed or injured in the massacre. The Chinese government has never officially acknowledged or apologized for the events of June 4th, and discussion of the incident remains censored in China to this day.
