What the teams said â Qualifying in Japan

Both Verstappen and Tsunoda reported a few car struggles in FP3, including some understeer, but they did expect to be in the top 10 come Qualifying. Verstappen made it through, but his team mate did not â Tsunoda tumbling in Q2. He couldnât hook up his first lap, then made a mistake in Turn 2 on his second. Until that moment, Tsunoda had looked to be within touching distance of his team mate. But Verstappen can step it up when it matters, and he did just that on his final Q3 run. His team called it an insane lap and it looked it, the Dutchman nailing his effort to grab a slightly surprising pole position.
