nostr:npub1z0tnfqskt0843g9ze5n4z8w5d7lrn2xjgwuauuqv89f4ugwywvrs8cech3 I am happy to state on the record that the entire settings zone needs to be comprehensively reworked. It's like someone whacked a piñata and the checkboxes just scattered everywhere.
I'm one of the people who's really missed full-text search, especially from academic and public health twitter, but I've only wanted it here if it can be done in a safety-preserving way.
It looks like search is on the way, with an "opt-out" via account discoverability, currently labeled "Suggest account to others" in preferences. I hope to see clear official comms soon about the details, but in the meantime, here's how to opt out:

I will clarify here that despite wanting search, I don't have an opinion rn about whether this implementation of search is the right one.
What I will say is that I'm on the side of moving steadily but cautiously and doing lots of advance communication with site users when something big is changing.

nostr:npub1xl7h4pw0s4q2xsrfdvmum39nazwv049aaew47taahaqtcnx76ydsh3ss7c I had no idea either—literally said "Oh NO" out loud when I saw the byline this morning. 💔
Madeline Miller, author of Circe and one of my favorite living writers, on the increasingly stigmatized fight to avoid reinfection while dealing with long covid:
“…how long am I going to do this? Until indoor air is safe for all, until vaccines prevent transmission, until there’s a cure for long covid. Until I’m not risking my family’s future on a grocery run. Because the truth is that however immortal we feel, we are all just one infection away from a new life.”
nostr:npub14ep69ps7cvpl9fyt4hqmfm8s5k08kzg0fta0d7mq9uxn822j2saschcpuj There is SO MUCH bullshit and we know so little about it. Buncha marbles rattling around in a shoebox.

nostr:npub1ntsy0p9pu74fpve5p7gqpfudpxwz4fuqdc7xmrt23yr2dnzemhrqu9wpfp FWIW, I personally have no trouble reading long initial posts, it's just lengthy/speedy serial replies that get dizzying.
nostr:npub14pk7ymgjn7pxxahyn08taf4f6hm5avg34nh9w70wmdu24ndxs4zs2y80yc Yay! It's pretty startling to me how much the alternate-day schedule improved absorption and reduced side effects.
In case any of you have severe iron-deficiency anemia, this 2020 research on hepcidin/timing 100% turned things around for me and I don't think it's made it onto most people's radar:

Every-other-day supplementation w/ 100mg iron bisglycinate in the morning + orange juice + C supplement + food + (coffee no closer than an hour before/after) is finally moving the needle for me without worsening autoimmune-related inflammation. YMMV.
Internet-brain disclaimers:
I don't absorb iron well and have been working on this with my doctors since I was a kid—please refrain from offering me advice about meat, tofu, spinach, liquid iron, iron fish, IV infusions, etc. If it exists, I've tried it.
Also, gentlemen of fedi, please don't take this as an invitation to publicly divulge your partners' medical conditions. 🙏

I wonder if I got grandfathered in or something. If it’s default off I will relax and be chattier lol.

it keeps happening to me in replies from strangers and always makes my eyes cross a bit

But I do remember early Twitter and its charms.
nostr:npub1aa96zhtvdq82sz34fpx33wnh5tqudppef8qj6lwjv4ram8gqj92sk7t3jt I hadn’t been, but having everyone who follows me on Bluesky see all my replies to everyone else has made me sharply cut back on how much I converse there so that I’m not overwhelming.
But an “algo” (🤖) that offered a list of people with whom the people I follow frequently chat would be super nice for me.
