The new effort from the Biden-Harris administration is focused on “the corporate practice of giving people the run around, wasting their precious time and money,” according to the White House’s fact sheet. The only finalized policy among those listed as part of the “Time Is Money” initiative is the Transportation Department’s much-lauded (and promoted) rule that requires airlines to provide automatic refunds for canceled flights. Next furthest along are the Federal Trade Commission’s proposed rules that would require that companies make it as easy to cancel a subscription as it is to sign up for one. 🇺🇸

Why Many Nonprofit Hospitals Are Rolling in Money. “Hospitals are some of the biggest businesses in the U.S. — nonprofit in name only,” said Martin Gaynor, an economics and public policy professor at Carnegie Mellon University. “They realized they could own for-profit businesses and keep their not-for-profit status. So the parking lot is for-profit; the laundry service is for-profit; they open up for-profit entities in other countries that are expressly for making money” And they have somehow managed to keep a myriad of for-profit enterprises under their nonprofit umbrella — a status that means they pay little or no taxes, float bonds at preferred rates, and gain numerous other financial advantages. 🇺🇸

How price gouging bans really work. If banning price gouging is communist, then the U.S. went Marxist long ago. Most of us live in states that already have bans in place. 38 states, including the most populous like Texas, California and New York, prohibit companies from jacking up prices during emergencies — think bans on selling $10 bottles of water after a major hurricane.

Debby flooded inland Georgia. With climate change supercharging storms, it likely won’t be the last. “We know that climate change is juicing precipitating systems in general,” said Shepherd. “The data has been very clear that when it rains, it rains with greater intensity, even in just sort of heavy afternoon thunderstorms, not just hurricanes.” 🇺🇸
