Yeah it's slow but: Dont trust, verify. Each blocks need to be correct before getting the next.
From my understanding it's download -> verify -> download -> verify. You cant bulk download the blocks and verify after.
The first years of blocks in Bitcoin are (pretty) much empty. Nothing for your hardware to verify. Once transactions start to show up in blocks they need to get verified, this takes time. Sometimes even alot of time.
