What is the "Freedom Tech" Movement?

From the earliest days of the Internet, an ongoing struggle has existed between those who would use the immense potential of this new technology to control or suppress human freedom, and those who would use it to empower the individual and promote human flourishing. This struggle has taken many forms over the decades, starting with the cryptoanarchists in the 1980’s and the cypherpunks of the 1990’s, both of which shared a common goal of enabling individual freedom through the use of cutting-edge technology.

Just as us humans strive for freedom, information in the digital age “longs to be free.” The “freedom tech” movement is a burgeoning grassroots movement that aims to encourage the optimistic, untethered development and use of technologies by people from all backgrounds, languages, and cultures across the globe. Freedom tech allows us to slow a rise in authoritarianism, fight back against encroaching surveillance capitalism, and empower journalists, dissidents, and activists everywhere.

We believe that the freedom tech movement closely aligns with that of the open source movement, and we hold the ideals of free and open-source software closely. While the freedom tech movement has no central authority or leader to dictate its aims, we have laid out the aspects of technology we consider vital to the movement below. Freedom tech should be:

✅Resistant to censorship

NTAG4XX cards have a chip that prevents double billing and fraud with internal counter and extra parameters for every spend. True, we didn't use it Riga, but we can get this setup for future conferences... then the problem you mention will be solved.

I have also spoken with Vivek from Coinkite on getting SatsCards working with on BTCPay POS... can be done, just if enough time in the day can be found for coding...

Although the cards in Riga were issued as static LNURLw (gift cards). They were not locked down.

We ran workshops with nostr:npub1n2ph08n4pqz4d3jk6n2p35p2f4ldhc5g5tu7dhftfpueajf4rpxqfjhzmc to help people get their cards set up as bolt cards with replay protection and a lot achieved self sovereign bolt card activation ✨

I thought you were using an on-chain satscard from Coinkite. The bolt lnurlw cards can be problematic. Granted same problem a visa would have only they have checks for things like double billing and fraud. You're also relying on someone else running an lnbits or lnurl service and hosted wallet.

I believe lnbits let's you throttle transactions to any preset timeout you like. To avoid, their words, ass milking 🤣🤣🤣

But that would just delay a bad actor.

You can run a bolt card service yourself and program in any payment rules you like. MIT Open Source s/w available at github.com/boltcard ⚡

I will be glad to see the legacy VISA/MC card system go. They've indoctrinated multiple generations into thinking it's normal to have somebody else decide whether or not you can spend your money — and then charge you for the privilege.

Don't hold your breath on that one. WoS are not interested in implementing card programming. They do have a nice PoS with bolt card function though.
