A LAZY ROWER
i wanted to learn to single scull because i had been a coxswain & wanted to get out on the water again. i kept seeing the boats while i strolled along the vltava and missed the calm rhythm and sound of the oars splashing. so, i joined a club. but, before i could even start learning (if you are a coxswain word travels fast—rowers in abundance, coxes are rare) they asked me if i would cox for an early morning outing. i hadn’t been in an eight since college so i was hesitant. surely they had their own coxswains, but they said they wanted a native english speaker. the head of google emea (europe, middle east & africa) was coming to prague and the googlers were going on an early morning run with him. what he did not know but i did was that the googlers would run him to the boathouse and—surprise!—have an eight rigged and ready to launch with a Czech Olympian, the head of the Czech Olympic committee, a couple of national elite rowers AND ME who had not coxed in a decade! nobody told me journalists would be there or i probably would have said no. matt brittin, also a former Olympian, did not—thankfully—end up getting crashed into a pier or a dock. as you can see, i docked that 60 foot shell as smoothly as if i had last done it yesterday.

—PURGE: Basically if you are kidnapped & the gang who kidnapped you commits a crime and compels you to participate & you have no choice you are not guilty of said crime, you are a victim. So “purging” indigenous organic humans from U.S. state records is a way to symbolically absolve them of crimes of the empire. Hegseth & Co., those folks, their people have to take full on responsibility for all crimes even those done by their ancestors. Can’t offload the bad karma on those with good karma anymore.
—VALUATIONS: The only thing artificial about these so-called intelligent companies are the valuations. If they were real they would not be, for example, “44” or “33.” What we are witnessing are folks running old operating systems, old programs, that worked for then in the past but won’t work now. They can’t upgrade because their hardware cannot run the new operating system. Would fry the hardware. So, Chinua, but in reverse. You get what you paid for and we have the receipts. We’ll see more satellites fall, more planes down, more transport ships grounded, and on & on. You can block some UV light so we all have to load up on Vit D but your aluminium trails of whatever can’t block neutrinos. Ya’ll are not that smart.

Funnily enough, the night before watching this episode, I wrote in an arts application I submitted, “…the same way a Mona Lisa is in a gallery but copies exist elsewhere. Well, most people don’t have posters of the Mona Lisa, let’s say, Starry Night.”

PREMIUM ICE CREAM
For some reason today I asked a family member to pick up some chocolate ice cream on the way home. The grocery is a local store not a box chain so I said, just get the store brand, figuring it’s quality. I don’t eat ice cream that often. My grandfather, however, religiously ate chocolate ice cream after dinner, always Haagen Das, but later switched to Kirkland brand for the better deal—because it was premium ice cream. He calculated the density of ice cream by weight and volume; he would never get Breyer’s—“that’s just air.” I remember he taught me to buy sheets the same way—by checking the percale thread count. That’s how you could tell which cost was actually better according to the thread density, or quality. Always maximizing value. Don’t pay for air.
The chocolate ice cream arrived this evening, and it was a generous tub of chocolate Haagen Das.
—Oh, I said, reminds me of Grandpa.
—Someone in the aisle suggested I get the store brand because it’s good but I chose this one.
—Well, that’s the one Grandpa always got.
At age 92 our Grandpa fainted at the wheel of his rusty Ford pickup on Route 12. A tree stopped the truck as he had veered off the road. He was not, in his stubbornly libertarian fashion, wearing a seatbelt, so he slammed into the rather large steering wheel. He broke his jaw, some ribs, damaged his hip. He was in such great shape before the crash he managed to survive a couple more years, but never made it to his goal of 100 due to the accident. At the senior rehab facility I heard, even broken and bruised, he was still catching the eyes of the ladies. While he was testing out walking again after surgery they commented that he was a handsome gentleman—and perhaps a wealthy one at that.
—In the parking lot I helped an old man who looked just like him load his groceries into his car.
—Really?
—He was a vet too, just like Grandpa, but not WW2 and never in combat.
—Isn’t that something.
—Yeah. I told him to wear his seatbelt.
There was a blood moon eclipse the night he passed away. I remember it glowing so full and so red. Last night, too, was a blood moon eclipse.
I guess he misses premium chocolate ice cream!

Can you imagine testifying AT AGE 12 in a courtroom sitting there all by yourself as A CHILD recounting this horrendous treatment to a roomful of adults? About a community church leader? Maybe testimony was in judge’s quarters but still. What a hero.
