The Japanese word jisei most closely translates to “self-control” or restrain, and is made up of two kanji: 自制.
自 (ji), means self.
制 (sei), conveys the idea of rules or governance.
自制 (Jisei) combines the self with the idea of control, authority and regulation. Together these kanjis emphasize the ability to govern one’s own actions and impulses.

Duty and loyalty are often seen as separate virtues, but in Japanese Bushido, they were combined as the broader and more holistic “Duty of Loyalty”.
The Japanese word for “loyalty” is chūgi, which is made up of two Kanji: 忠義.
忠 (chū), represents the concept of loyalty, devotion and a duty to someone or something higher.
義 (gi), means righteousness or justice.
Together, 忠義 (chūgi) combines the steadfastness of the heart with a commitment to a righteous promise.
