"if it's not an enthusiastic yes, it's a no" is the best advice I've put into action in years
nostr:npub1efvh0km06s5fqtz2mczx9yutnc6f4ksn39f6z0nz5n8hgde6x7vqp04jx2 it feels true (at least it does from my Australian village where my neighbours walk my dog if I’m stuck in a meeting in the afternoon)
nostr:npub1xr8gd35szene0r2yvfafr29tjwdedgwd89lnfpmh3pylnygnvd4qmf3q0g same for me in my village where taking care of each others' dogs when people go on vacation has become one of the many ties that bind us
we blame social media, polarization, stuff in the water, the u.s. culture of overwork -- all of which are factors-- but my lived experience suggests that the most central driver of isolation, anomie and despair in America is the fact that most of us no longer live in a way that makes it easy to bump into neighbors and turn them into friends
I asked for tools to help those new to Mastodon find people to follow and you answered!
Mastodon is such an excellent community, in my experience.
Germans are having a cultural crisis over the fact that their trains are now chronically late.
“This is an embarrassment, it is a cultural crisis for the German people,” said Andreas Knie, a professor of transport policy at the Berlin Social Science Center. “We love to brag about how we are the best, we are the most efficient, but the late Deutsche Bahn, and our failing football team, are proof that we aren’t making great things anymore.”

nostr:npub1mxkqn7tt893sn78tskkqcx46rgjn7fcal4nkus5rl8nwhr2qmstsgqalwe wow, I love that framing of it. If Tolkien had been born in the late 20th century I wonder if his vice would be so normalized he never would have written LoTR
just had a conversation with a colleague about why he doesn't use mastodon more
short version: discovery (of people and accounts) on here is pretty bad
how do we fix this? is there some go-to solution that I just don't know about?
want to expand on this and say people can be a nerd about literally anything
I once rode shotgun with a long haul trucker who was absolutely a trucking nerd, he talked for about 8 hours straight, it was fantastic
nostr:npub1nq6jkwtzj9lzry4uxqzfs8yy0cdh72sndjcpx70px3x7gqwsdfxq9ldk6g hooray! Thanks. I hope you enjoy it. :)
it's funny to me how 'nerd' is sort of its own nationality, and wherever I go & whatever someone's background, if we have this in common, we can connect
I wonder if the Justice Department wanted Trump's account for the DMs?
In which case...

The chaos at Twitter after Musk's takeover was so complete that the company missed a deadline to comply with a Justice Department subpoena of the contents of Trump's account.

There are nearly 6,000 offshore wind turbines in Europe.
In the U.S. there are 7.
The total U.S. offshore wind capacity is thousands of times greater than our current total capacity to produce electricity.
How can I work with Megan McArdle? Her writing is clear and to-the-point, and her insight and opinions on work are sharp

nostr:npub13vp956ypwm4mpw0mnfp244fxcwnyk22xxlggxus87rl8ytutcaeqxjaj4j hey this is a great idea! also I don't use facebook at all lol
nostr:npub13vp956ypwm4mpw0mnfp244fxcwnyk22xxlggxus87rl8ytutcaeqxjaj4j part of me wants to be like "I don't get it" but I think in the end journalists are creatures of convenience / many feel an existential need to stay on twitter
I'm *extremely* lucky that I have an audience at WSJ no matter what I do or don't do with social media
it gives me a freedom that I think, frankly, most other journalists don't feel
(also artists who need social to sell their work, etc.)
nostr:npub13vp956ypwm4mpw0mnfp244fxcwnyk22xxlggxus87rl8ytutcaeqxjaj4j nostr:npub19sw2n5zsx4xjfr5a9p3l5pjnkrj3qnk00rhjqy8jme97n3nwcy3q3ruxjk I think it's entirely personal preference.
Plus, let's be real, I'm more of a social media addict and Joanna, blessedly, is not.
Mastodon gives me an outlet for wanting to connect online in an environment that's so much less toxic than Twitter ever was.
