Parks that are built in such a way to be welcoming and inclusive to all

Parks that host events celebrating diversity

Parks that offer safety services (like lifeguards)

^ These types of parks take active management, but are beloved and improve city life

Americans work hard – and stock prices are soaring. But people are STRESSED, and the 40+ hour work-week is not conducive to a lifestyle that features something other than work (and yes, people deserve to and should do other things than work).

Something has to give.

You’ll likely see some reduction in mental fatigue and feeling overwhelmed when you make simple, direct and specific goals for yourself.

Humans are responsible for the deaths of billions of animals every year, but is surprisingly difficult to determine which everyday activities are harmful to wildlife, and identify effective ways to protect not-yet-endangered species:

Researchers have recently used 674,320 newly digitized records from wildlife rehabilitation centers across the U.S. to paint a comprehensive picture of threats affecting over 1,000 species:

The word “sonder” means “the profound feeling of realizing that everyone, including strangers passing in the street, has a life as complex as one's own, which they are constantly living despite one's personal lack of awareness of it.”

#Humility grants you the ability to experience sonder as one of its many benefits.

Jen Cole Wright, a psychology professor at the College of Charleston, has studied this often overlooked virtue, and how your life can benefit from it:

Bigger vehicles can be safer in crashes, but far more dangerous for pedestrians.

And the average size of cars and trucks in the U.S. continues to grow. Some current models – like that of the Toyota Rav4 – are a third larger than they were only 15 years ago.

That’s led to a 77% increase in pedestrian fatalities since 2010.

“Without rapid and sustained reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, the Earth is currently on course to reach temperatures of roughly 5.4°F above preindustrial levels by the end of the century.”

You’d have to look back millions of years to find temperatures that high on Earth, a period far before the climate that allowed humans to flourish. Here’s the evidence from paleoclimate science:

#Slavery in biblical and ancient societies had many variations. But it’s clear that slavery during those eras was as horrific, just like the 19th-century transatlantic slave trade, according to the historical and archeological evidence.

When the KKK tried to steal the 1872 presidential election by killing and intimidating Black voters, federal troops swept in and arrested hundreds of Klansmen, and the new Department of Justice secured convictions in 140 cases.

That same law is now being used to prosecute #Trump, as the basis of the 4th count of special counsel Jack Smith's indictment

For the last 30 years, low back pain has been the leading cause of #disability around the world – with over 600 million living with the condition.

A new meta-analysis determined three major risk factors:

> obesity

> smoking

> workplace ergonomic factors

Addressing these could cut the burden of low back pain by 39%

Over the past 26 years, Janet Echelman has produced striking sculptures that rival the size of skyscrapers.

She says she never set out to be a sculptor of wind. But if you’ve ever explored Porto, Portugal, walked the streets of Gwanggyo, South Korea, or passed through West Hollywood, you might have seen her massive iridescent sculptures of fiber floating above cities and the millions of people in them.

It might not be logical to believe your relationship is “meant to be” – but many of us believe it.

This belief in destined love may have evolved as a way to keep couples together long enough to reproduce and raise children.

Many office buildings have been left empty since the start of the pandemic. To make them into housing, they might need new windows, altered HVAC systems and rewiring of electrical systems.

It’d be expensive to do, but it is doable.
