look into some of the work filippo valsorda is doing. he went full time on open source over a year ago and has been exploring different models. as a person, he's insufferable, but he's intelligent and is really trying to figure out full time open source. https://words.filippo.io/full-time-maintainer/
and make the source available but don't let anyone use it and then keep calling yourself open source.
yeah I mean we don't need nips for every application of the protocol. seems ridiculous. if we standardize over time on an application, then great. but it doesn't need to be at the protocol level.
