GOOOOOOOD MORNING
Don't forget Ledger has confirmed their software can extract your seed from your device.
Use a wallet that isn't closed source! Here's a simple guide: https://bitcoin.rocks/wallets
DIY SeedSigner FTW ๐ฏ๐
I try not to repost stuff here that I already posted on Twitter / X, but this is too cool not share.
There's one thing that excites me more than anything with this project, and that's when people start saving in #Bitcoin, as a way to change their own future.
Sizwe is the owner of the GlobalBTCFest shack that we painted in January. Like all of the other painted-shack owners he receives R60 (~$3.50) in sats/week.
This is one way to get small amounts of #Bitcoin into the hands of the community without just handing it out randomly, but paying it in exchange for something. To encourage the circular economy.
Most spend their sats at the township shops we onboarded. But not Sizwe.
Sizwe saved all his sats. And over the course of 33 weeks (with weekly payments of 10k - 12k sats) he's saved over 350k sats, ~ $100 in Bitcoin, which nostr:npub10vudmjqhr8kn2kv2pxhezt2h5t5c9zauwq8qr56nhdn64yacsqyqf08djm moved into a self-custody wallet for him his week.
If you'd like to help encourage Sizwe to keep going, to keep saving, you can send him some sats here:
rumpledfang28@walletofsatoshi.com
Plus, all zaps received in response to this post will be sent to Sizwe.

Please share everything here too. I'm not on Twitter..
Phew, it's been a while since I've been active here but I'm slowly getting back in the saddle!
Welcomed our second For Privacy child into the world recently and things have been joyfully turned upside down as a result ๐
Quick thread of random updates ๐งต
I... spent all my Monero ๐
Didn't expect it to happen so soon, but between onboarding locals to Monero, donating to FOSS projects, funding CCS proposals, and using Cake Pay and CoinCards it went quickly.
Thankfully the options for restocking are getting better by the day!
Shoutout to LocalMonero and Trocador for being amazing tools for onboarding people (and myself) to Monero directly.
I shut down my public Lightning node ๐ฅฒ
After months of frustration dealing with downed channels and failed payments, I finally gave up on running my own 24/7 node (for now).
I'll circle back eventually, but for now have migrated to using PhoenixWallet w/ splicing via Tor.
I'm also testing out nostr:npub1xnf02f60r9v0e5kty33a404dm79zr7z2eepyrk5gsq3m7pwvsz2sazlpr5 new LSP and in-wallet node, and will hopefully be using it full time moving forward:
My hot take for Lightning moving forward is that only LSP models will be viable for 99.9% of people, and we need to figure out good ways to do the LSP model without sacrificing transactional privacy.
I got invited (again, surprisingly!) to speak at this years Hacker's Congress at Paralelni Polis in Prague!
While my presentation isn't ironed out, my aim is to speak on the options for scaling Bitcoin outside of Lighting, i.e. drivechains, trustless zk-rollups, covenants.
I discovered an amazing FOSS weather app, Breezy Weather ๐ง๏ธ
https://github.com/breezy-weather/breezy-weather
I've been living entirely without a weather app as I couldn't find any good options, but love that this is FOSS and has strong pro-privacy weather providers and options.
I've started using Obtanium to install/update almost all of my Android apps ๐ฝ
https://github.com/ImranR98/Obtainium
Obtainium is an absolutely fantastic app that lets you add app sources from all over (Github, F-Droid, websites, you name it) and track updates and install them.
I tried out Proton Pass ๐
While I think I'll stick with Bitwarden for now as I'm pretty firmly entrenched and like to keep all my eggs out of a single basket, I'm really impressed with the UI and UX of Proton Pass, especially it's integration with email aliasing.
I started using Proton for all of my hosted service emails โ๏ธ
While it's only available for Visionary/Business accounts, having a reliable and privacy-preserving way to send outbound emails from services like Nextcloud is a huge step forward:
https://proton.me/support/smtp-submission
I discovered an amazing Photoprism Android app, 100% FOSS ๐ผ๏ธ
https://github.com/Radiokot/photoprism-android-client
I've long-since switched my wife and I off of Google Photos and to self-hosted Nextcloud + Photoprism, but haven't had a proper Android client (which my wife hated!)
Finally that changed.
Photoprism Gallery is fantastic, loads quickly, and provides great, simple options.
With two kids it's really important to me to have strong backups *without sacrificing privacy* for family photos and videos, and now I can also easily browse those on the go.
Want to know what's even cooler? The author, Oleg, loves Bitcoin + Monero and accepts both for donations, including via Lightning!
Please please please take a moment and send the devs of FOSS projects you love some sats or piconeros whenever possible.
Donate to what you love ๐งก
I *think* that sums up the bigger changes while I've been mostly AFK.
What did I miss out there while I was gone? Anything huge in the Bitcoin, Monero, or Privacy spaces that you think I'd like to catch up on?
Thanks for the updates!
Congrats! Take it easy and enjoy your time with your family ๐
We are back online! Things have been stable for the last 5 hours and we've made a number of improvements to assist with the generic error that has happened.
Essentially our encrypted lightning storage database had gone down. By default (configurable), the user's lightning state is encrypted and stored remotely so that everything can be restored with just the seed words. This also allows for using Mutiny with multiple devices.
While the state is also stored locally on the user device, we've had a number of problems in the past with that state not always saving to disk (mostly safari webview problems). We had to save remotely too for three layers of data redunancy and we check against all three and pick the greater version.
Because with lightning, if the latest state is not used, it will cause force closes and loss of funds. So if remote storage is enabled (default), we require checking it.
When our DB went down, requests were not timing out. That was one fix we made, after 30 seconds of loading a single request, we error out when initializing the wallet. We also made a new screen for when this happens.
Further, we have now implemented "safe mode" that still allows for viewing your wallet and accessing your on chain funds.
Lastly, we have made a number of improvements to our VSS (versioned storage server) database to hopefully help make sure it doesn't go down again. We will be monitoring this and look at other solutions if it continues to be a problem.
Download the latest android version if you used that, or simply reload the PWA/web version to pull down the latest updates. Sorry about the trouble, let us know if there's any issues! https://github.com/MutinyWallet/mutiny-web/releases/tag/v0.4.12-1
Thanks for the update and transparency.
I have a few questions now..
So "the user's lightning state is encrypted and stored remotely".. I understand why this is necessary.. But is it stored in a security and privacy preserving manner? Is Mutiny able to decrypt this lightning state?
So in this case, the seed words are sufficient to recover the lightning channels?? This is amazing! Very convenient for users!
Thanks for the great work. ๐๐
You Can Now Install Geyser As Progressive Web App
"One of the most requested features to date, you can now install the Geyser PWA on http://geyser.fund."

Bullish on PWA's
Liquid Federation Open Sourced Its Functionary Code
"The Liquid Federation fulfills a long standing goal to open-source the functionary code, allowing anyone to audit the code and create their own Liquid-like network," was announced in a blog post.
https://www.nobsbitcoin.com/liquid-federation-open-sourced-its-functionary-code/
Open source is valuable. This generates confidence in projects. ๐
This is fฯ{king insane..
Zapping just got a huge speed improvement for Mutiny! Zap requests should now appear within 5 seconds. #zapathon

So using Lightning on Mutiny is reasonably private, because sender privacy is already good and receiving happens via Voltage LSP..
What about onchain txs on Mutiny? Do we expose a lot to mempool . space? Is it possible to connect Mutiny to an Electrum Server like electrs or EPS?
Thanks for the amazing work! :)
So which self-custodial wallets should we avoid?
