Preparing to dig into this Hal Finney relief carving in reclaimed slate..⚒️🏃🏻♂️
This is the largest relief I’ve ever done and probably the most complicated.
Aiming to have this ready for the nostr:npub1rujwkh9c3jnq70g3v62rrm6m7pxqsz25675narm74q9emcwqltjswe00fg auction for the 4th annual Running Bitcoin Challenge benefitting ALS research.

Need to do some sanding and touch up some of the gold leaf and then I’ll hit the whole thing with shellac to protect it and add more shine.
I need to practice more with gold leaf. This turned out well but not nearly as even as I would have liked. 
Ran out of gold leaf and had to order more… but on a positive note, the texture is working out just how I wanted.
Once I finish applying it, I’ll go in with a chisel and scrape it away from the bamboo and leaves. If all goes well I’ll have super crisp lines against the gold backdrop and it should really bring to mind traditional Japanese gold screens.

I’ve used a lower grit of sandpaper on the background to try to give it the texture of woven silk. Next I’ll finish the bamboo and then add gold leaf only to the background. 
First pass complete. ⚒️🎋
With relief carvings especially, shadow is incredibly important. Looking good so far with that aspect here.
Now to go back and touch up the background, thin and round out the branches, and sand away some of the rough edges..

Anyone have tips for photographing shiny surfaces?🍁 
Thank you! So for this I did a little experimenting with enamel paints. Needed something that would last a long time and also have a shiny finish. Each leaf has 2-3 colors layered to get the effect I wanted.
Calling this piece DONE.
Hand carved in reclaimed slate. Enamel painted leaves. My goal was to capture a moment in time, autumn leaves floating, a ripple in a pond.
It’s not done perfectly but I’m happy with it for now. Definitely going to try my hand at a larger version soon.
