May 13, 2025 โ We are proud to announce that My First Bitcoin has received a $1 million grant from #startsmall. With this financial support from Jack Dorsey's philanthropic initiative, we will continue to serve grassroots Bitcoin education initiatives worldwide.
This grant accelerates our work in the creation and distribution of free and open-source Bitcoin education materials and infrastructure. It will not only help us improve existing resources, such as the Bitcoin Diploma, Bitcoin Intro Course, and teacher training workshops, but also to scale our digital platforms like our Online School and Community Hub.
As a non-profit, founded in 2021, we have grown from a local project into a global movement. Besides creating curricula and frameworks, our team has directly taught tens of thousands of in-person students, as we workshop and refine our materials based on real world feedback.
In 2023, we launched the Independent Bitcoin Educators Node Network, providing a space for others to join us on our mission. The network spans 65+ projects from 35+ countries, including circular economies, meetup organizers and other grassroots projects. All commit to the same six pillars: that their education is independent, impartial, community-led, Bitcoin-only, quality, and focused on empowerment over profit.
While we support that network, it is now self-governing. We always seek to give power-to, rather than have power-over.
John Dennehy, founder and Executive Director of My First Bitcoin, explains:
โThe revolution of Bitcoin education is that it teaches students HOW to think, not WHAT to think. Funding from sources with their own incentives is the greatest vulnerability that threatens that. Education will be captured by whoever funds it. We will never take any government money and frequently turn down funding from corporations and companies. The subtle influence of funding has ruined fiat education and we need to create alternative models for the revolution of Bitcoin education to realize its full potential.โ
Funding for Bitcoin education must be transparent.
This grant is a huge win for all of us. For Bitcoin itself, but even more for Independent Bitcoin Education as a whole. It enables us to serve the global community better than ever before. It shows everyone what can be achieved if you stay close to your values. โMy First Bitcoin is a proof-of-concept for all independent Bitcoin educators that if you stay on the mission, even when it's challenging, then you will come out the other side even stronger,โ added Dennehy.

๐ Update on the Youth Curriculum we have been working on, alongside the The Little HODLer and the El Salvador government.
In May 2024 we signed an MOU with the Bitcoin Office El Salvador
to contribute to the creation of a Youth Curriculum for the school system in El Salvador. As we never take any government fundingโto always be independentโour condition was that the material created be open-source and free to use by any educator in the world. This has generated a lot of interest and we are receiving lots of questions about when the books will become available.
There are three parts to a project such as this: content, design & distribution. We have only been involved with the first part and our work there is complete. As far as we know the launch will be in late May and after that the open-source version will be available online.

This week @EducacionSV (MINED) took charge of bitcoin education in the public school system in El Salvador.
Why is this great news?
MINED is now fully capable of teaching bitcoin education in the school system, which means ๐ฐ๐ ๐๐๐ง ๐๐จ๐๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐ฆ๐จ๐ซ๐ ๐จ๐ง ๐ ๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ซ๐จ๐จ๐ญ๐ฌ, ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ-๐ฅ๐๐ ๐๐๐ฎ๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐งโand together we can teach even more people!

My First Bitcoin began in August 2021 when there was no bitcoin education in El Salvador, except from the OG circular economy project, @Bitcoinbeach.
The first months we spent recruiting locals around the nation who were interested in teaching in their own communitiesโin houses, churches, cafes, parks, literally anywhere and everywhere we could. By early 2022 school directors began to ask if we could teach in their schools while they waited for a government program. We dove in, creating a new 10-week curriculum. There was incredible curiosity in those early days and as the first to teach about Bitcoin in the school system, we did our best to satisfy that need.
In late 2022, after plenty of real-world testing and improvements, we open-sourced the Bitcoin Diploma.
In 2023 the government used our Diploma as its primary source material to build its own custom version. We held classes for MINED admin and managerial staff and, along with Bitcoin Beach, we trained 500 public school teachers, who then began to teach in their own schools. After the last training group was finished in 2024, we told MINED that we believed they were ready, suggested they form a Bitcoin Department in order to really scale, and that weโd be happy to help.
Last week MINED instructed schools we were working at to cease activities with us, presumably because they are ready to lead. At one of the schools where we were teaching we had already told the students and announced publicly that we planned a big graduation for them at the end of April. @NodeNationSV has taken over the Bitcoin Diploma program there, and thankfully those students will still get a graduation the same week we had planned for them. Late April is also when two new workbooks for children (grades 2 & 3), that we collaborated on with the Little HODLer, will launch in the public school system.
It's been an honor to be a part of this. ๐๐ก๐๐ง๐ค ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ ๐๐๐๐๐.
Bitcoin education in the public school system has come a long way. Each year we taught more students in the school systemโfrom hundreds to thousands to tens of thousands, and we are hoping that growth will continue with government and allied educators.
๐๐ฎ๐ซ ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐๐ฅ๐ฐ๐๐ฒ๐ฌ ๐ญ๐จ ๐๐ฆ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฐ๐๐ซ ๐จ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ซ๐ฌ to take charge rather than to dictate to them. Empowering others is Bitcoin; consolidating control is fiat.
This change will also allow us to accelerate the international work we began in 2023โcreating open-source tools and frameworks that any independent educator can tap into. That self-governing network is now active in ๐๐ ๐ง๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ and growing quickly.
The future is bright for #BitcoinEducation, both here in El Salvador and around the world! ๐
