I agree that it comes down to incentives, as you point out.

Whether it’s a misinterpretation (intentional or not), or an entitled/inflated pancakes v. waffles outrage, or an a attempt at a witty dunk on a perceived enemy to score points, or a pandering to one’s follower set to maintain loyalty, or imposing/expressing an authoritative opinion outside of one’s expertise to increase an audience or relevance…

All of these are driven by an incentive to be seen, feel validated, or get paid. I think it comes down to culture. Note, for example, how Tumblr used to have a unique audience and content creation. It was different than MySpace or Facebook. Some of that had to do with how these platforms were built and how user interactions were displayed. Some of it was how the content, itself, was consumed by users. Note that many areas of Reddit (at the time of writing) still have a playful sense of humor, and supportive community, while X is broadly a cesspool of insults and hatred. Why? Is it just because the Mods make it so? Is it the ability to downvote?

Seems like there’s an opportunity for a Reddit-like Nostr alternative. Mods wouldn’t be able to remove content from relays of course, but it would be nice to have a community that wasn’t permissioned and publicly traded, with all the incentives that come with *that*.

TL;DR build better communities by supporting others with thoughtful interactions and disincentivize trolls (somehow).

I feel Like some features of Nostr are weird.

I'm into Bitcoin in the same way I am into nostr. I think they are great tools that have the potential to allow people to express themselves without limits imposed by others who do not share the same beliefs. I imagine you may be here for some of the same reasons, where we share some common ground. But I am heavily critical of the direction bitcoin is headed in, which is evident by what I have to say about it in my notes, not just what is in my profile. In fact, I would wager if someone was to summarise my posts about it, they may draw the conclusion that I have grown disappointed in its current state and the people who claim to champion what it initially set out to achieve. I would hate to see the same happen to this protocol.

I understand that you are working on solutions to make this platform more usable for everyone, and as unlikely as it may seem I appreciate that you would offer up your time and skills to do so. I would however be lying if I said I don't have some concerns about how you are approaching it, as do others. Of course harassment exists in many forms on nostr, I simply have not witnessed it in a blatant fashion as previously outlined. Perhaps I need to look harder, and perhaps I am somewhat oblivious to it. I fully agree with your second paragraph. 👍

but you could have helped grow #ActivityPub instead. it was proven. make an alternative but compatible version of #Mastodon more similar to Twitter with ads if you wanted. I don't get it.
