nostr:npub1jzxwmdlec3gyzdjnx8sy88m9n8rcw3he2z8cldsqtazyu8n6ezqqzkpeus Yeah, I was remembering an early September trip through Banff / Lake Louise when we got chased out of the mountains by an incoming blizzard. Ended up driving almost all the way to the states before we found a vacant hotel room. And you’re a fair whack north of that, though lower altitude.

nostr:npub13m5ugwzw6j2ezcksun0glm32tk5mj8scfu48ykdcqm2jy0akqatqfzlese Yeah. I don’t use my longer bow saws a ton, but if I’m cutting dovetails in 3/4 wood, I’ll use one with a 12” blade. For 3/8 or thinner wood dovetails, I use my little 6 inch coping saw (same pins as the big boy, just a shorter cross-arm).

nostr:npub13m5ugwzw6j2ezcksun0glm32tk5mj8scfu48ykdcqm2jy0akqatqfzlese For me, the big thing (besides using a tool I made) is that there’s no flex with my bow-saw coping saw. All the metal coping saws other than the Knew Concepts flex, and while I’m willing to spend $165 on a tool, I figured building my own coping saw would make me happier in the long term, and it has.

nostr:npub1g4g6mhs4vvqua78em68c48h9mk47r3px5qf73zdt8f8u7ykkwhasjrw8h5 It wasn’t too bad, but it was fragile and I had to make sure my tools were sharp. I got close and then snuck up on it with scrapers.

nostr:npub1m8vq2sjqqjxk27n66zqjl0kkzmxy02xec0ypagd7ujj02x2juy0s4jw90y I forget the name of that, but it’s not a “leaf” leaf. The real leaves are like 4-8 inches across. That’s more like the spinner on maple seeds that enables the seed to get a bit away from the parent tree.

nostr:npub13m5ugwzw6j2ezcksun0glm32tk5mj8scfu48ykdcqm2jy0akqatqfzlese In softwoods, a coping saw will leave a cleaner line, though. The alternating harder and softer wood is challenging unless your chisels are super sharp.

nostr:npub1g4g6mhs4vvqua78em68c48h9mk47r3px5qf73zdt8f8u7ykkwhasjrw8h5 Nice. I had a bowl last winter where I just put a little rim on it, and that little rim made all the difference in the world. Your decoration might be an easier solution. https://peekachello.art/mystery-wood-bowl-47

Also this morning, we had a quail checking out one of the birdhouses. And no, it didn’t fit inside the house, but it did seem to enjoy its perch from which it could survey the yard. #birb

Busy morning in the shop. Put the first coat of oil on my layout tools box (still much work to do on the interior, but it was time to set it aside and make progress on other things). Finished the little box to hold my trammel points. And sanded off the excess paint on one side of the sitting bench for my sweetie’s cousin, carved the S-braid on the other side, and put red paint into that carving. #woodworking

nostr:npub18yqwt4fespy6jn6a6qaahr2j5eqlyekrf49ucu58qgfe5sxgfpdsdd0jen I had a bumper crop of apricots like that on my tree in Minneapolis shortly after I bought the house. I ended up with between 5 & 7 gallons of pitted fruit. I made apricot wine, which was extremely tasty. Never had another harvest like that; the tree died about 6 years later, and I drank the last of the wine to mourn the passing of the tree.

Sean was the previous chef, but he’s moved to Las Vegas and is concentrating on Bar Castañeda. But Allan and Murph are partners this time instead of Murph leasing the building. Plus while it was closed, they did a bunch of fixes to the building, so hopefully they can avoid things like having to close for a weekend because the plumbing broke…

nostr:npub19aga6h9nvlkdehuxagkd3yl7hlc7a7879n5lytygvrmnwjdjt5sqdhqgye The other notable change is that they’re now open when the trains come through, so if you’re meeting someone on the Amtrak, or dropping them off, you can get a good lunch. Or you can sit at Nuckoll’s and have a few brews and beef jerky.

Had an early dinner at Legal Tender in Lamy today. Good grub, and things ran pretty smoothly. Murph even stopped by to see how we were doing. Mas Chile food truck was set up across the street at Nuckoll’s Lamy Taproom, so it was a pretty hopping time in Lamy today. https://www.legaltendersaloon.com/ #LifeInLamy #NewMexico

I now have a top wish for a search engine. I want something that returns HTML documents. Not videos, not PDFs, not things that require me to log in somewhere I won’t have an account. Just text.

Does gopher still work?
