There is a conversation to be had here around fundamentalism.
Fundamentalism works well if you want to build a megachurch with a lot of followers, but the walls will be high and thick, and the megachurch isn’t going to get along with others well.
If one wants to live in a society and have an effective society that is run well that involves the right to hold and practice according to different points of view (like what you said, “not believing it’s literally true”), fundamentalism is a really bad idea because, once again, fundamentalists don’t get along with other people well.

Freedom to make expensive mistakes even when somewhat catastrophic (like having the freedom to do one’s own plumbing). One learns fast as a kid this way, so long as one doesn’t physically harm other people and isn’t maimed or killed oneself. Takes a very patient parent.
I just notice that when my kid breaks things, if I don’t scold and interfere she learns how to do it right more fearlessly and in a lasting way.
Many years ago my family learned about the teflon in the kitchen the hard way. We didn’t know we had a teflon mat in the oven, which was left there by a well-meaning in-law as a house warming gift.
