American Pioneer Series #3 - Mountain Men

Who were mountain men? They were explorers living in the wilderness making their living from hunting and trapping.

They most were most common in the Rocky Mountains from the 1810s to 1880s and were instrumental in opening up the emigrant trails allowing people in the American Easy to settle into new territories.

These men decided to move into the wilderness following the Lewis and Clarke expedition to benefit from the thriving fur trade in the region. When the fur trade died, many of them decided to stay.

“We are done with this life in the mountains—done with wading in beaver dams, and freezing or starving alternately—done with Indian trading and Indian fighting. The fur trade is dead in the Rocky Mountains, and it is no place for us now if ever it was."

I cannot get over how mind blowing nostr:npub15dqlghlewk84wz3pkqqvzl2w2w36f97g89ljds8x6c094nlu02vqjllm5m ‘s concept of Bitcoin being the digital version of going west in America in the 1800s is. That’s it. We are gonna opt out of our govt digitally, and they will be done. No one is bullish enough.

Can you link to it?

Yep there’s a bunch there about #Damus being banned but not the whole protocol. Curious if the latter is possible

Oh really? Do you have a source pointing to the “story”?

Dumb question from an obviously non-technical person: If China can ban certain websites through their firewall, could they technically ban any traffic that is leveraging #nostr?

American Pioneer Series #2 - Jedediah Smith

Born to a family of modest means in Bainbridge, New York, Jedediah Smith sought to make his own way.

“I wanted to be the first to view a country on which the eyes of a white man had never gazed and to follow the course of rivers that run through a new land.”

So he did. In 1822, at the tender age of 23, Smith followed the call of an advertising for “One Hundred Enterprising Young Men” to explore and trap in the Rocky Mountains.

Only 4 years later he led a group of trappers on his first trip to California. On the way he had run -ins with a grizzly bear (he lost an ear), Mohave Indians and eventually Mexican authorities in the mission west of what is present-day Los Angeles.

Over the course of many years, Smith’s explorations opened the American West and involved many firsts, including being the first white man to cross what would become the states of Utah and Nevada and the first to enter California on the overland route.

My fascination for the history of the American frontier and its pioneers was recently reignited, so I’ll be posting short notes like this, to tell some of these stories.

Today we live at a new frontier once again, albeit a digital one. More than ever, we can learn from the great pioneers before us! nostr:note1fltucvdl89gmprtffwc9755zlqt4p5cj2prg0232xa6j39fngxsquxr6ef

The body is best left to its own devices: it needs the support of good nutrition and restful sleep but once that foundation is laid, it doesn’t need to be propped up with quick fixes. The more one relies on the short term fixing of symptoms over addressing of the causes, the greater the price one usually pays in the long run.

There is no such thing as a free lunch.

Thanks. I’m not… Any other ideas?

For some reason your attached pic isn’t loading for me in Damus. Not sure if I’m the only one who has been having this issue occasionally

American Pioneer Series #1 -

Daniel Boone

One of the archetypal frontier heroes of American folklore, Boone became famous for the exploration and settlement of Kentucky, which was at the time beyond the Western borders of the 13 colonies.

“It was the first of May, in the year 1769, that I resigned my domestic happiness for a time, and left my family ... to wander through the wilderness of America, in quest of the country of Kentucky.”

Boone became a symbol of the "natural man" who lives a virtuous, uncomplicated existence in the wilderness. This was famously expressed in Lord Byron's epic poem Don Juan (1822), which devoted a number of stanzas to Boone, including this one:

“Of the great names which in our faces stare,

The General Boon, back-woodsman of Kentucky,

Was happiest amongst mortals any where;

For killing nothing but a bear or buck, he

Enjoyed the lonely vigorous, harmless days

Of his old age in wilds of deepest maze.”
