I decided to join the MIT Bitcoin Hackathon, and the project I'm working on is a nostr to IMAP bridge (and depending on time, SMTP bridge too), in light of what happened recently with the bitcoin devs mailinglist on google groups

this is a regular nostr event (kind 11), being pulled up inside thunderbird (and it will work with any email client)

super important

update:

- looking pretty good, messages are shown in thunderbird, including multiple layers of nesting

- the server mostly seems to be stable

- naturally, we can read the messages

now working on:

- proper message parsing for anything other than 7bit ascii

- basic markdown to html, to allow basic formatting

- SMTP to allow users to reply via an email client, not just via nostr

now thats hot

Woah! I feel sick every month paying google for custom domain email. Leaning toward protonmail, but you may be cooking something special up.

Would love to test this once you feel like others can play around with it! οΏΌ

I think that if you're willing to work with something built in 12 ish hours you can test it now. It is very far from perfect, and honestly most of the code needs to be rewritten as like all hackathon projects, I focused on just building it quickly rather than building it properly πŸ™ƒ

But it works

I will add setup instructions tomorrow to quickly get started

Thanks! I’ll keep that in mind but no worries. I’m just interested in the tech behind it. These kinds of projects are what keep me lurking and looking at nostr.

Would it make sense to slap some sort of moderation on top or would it make more sense to structure the project differently for that use case?

Finally got a chance to start it. How do I see a mailing list, where do subscribe? Should I be able to see your test notes after being connected?

I managed to have a successful login to the proxy server

You would create a folder in your email client with an npub deciminating the mailing list. It's not the most intuitive but it was a quick hackathon project πŸ™‚

Had some issues with finding the notes. The first notes are starting to show up. Very cool. I'm imagining that something like this could be expanded to get DMs or with nostr:nprofile1qy2hwumn8ghj7etyv4hzumn0wd68ytnvv9hxgqgdwaehxw309ahx7uewd3hkcqpqh0uj825jgcr9lzxyp37ehasuenq070707pj63je07n8mkcsg3u0qmn5qdr ? I'll play around with it some more and see.

Very impressed so far!

Yeah, it's a bit flaky so far.

It technically works after you reload the inbox from your email client a few times, but honestly, when I get back to this as a serious part of another project, I'll rewrite most of the code to make it more robust.

I plan to integrate a similar concept into Eve, the main product I'm slowly working on, a tool for closed community networks.

DMs will definitely be supported, as will group conversations.

I’m starting to get a hang of it. Will keep an eye on your Eve project πŸ‘

Checked out your npub after seeing this note, then followed once I read the bio.

Looking forward to seeing freedom flow from your work. πŸŒΈπŸ€™πŸ»
