I think the advantage of #opensource in general is time. Opensource projects do not try to win through breakthrough innovation and marketing. They win through consistancy and minimizing of failure.
When all other options fail in certain usecases consistantly, the critical mass is eventually met.
So I summarize: Opensource grows slow since no one gets external incentives to use it. But when the application has unbeatable advantages, people change eventually when they realize the advantage.
