Why didn't OpenAI patent the "chat interface to an LLM" and kill all the competition?

Isn't it more like an idea and also maybe there's chat used in many things -- so something generic patent could cover it already?
I am not American but this episode & it's follow-up taught me about troll patents 😔

Chatbots like that existed for decades now
AOL holds that patent already duh, ever been on aim?
