You absolutely do need an ID, SSN, or ask for permission to acquire Bitcoin. The only major difference is that once you have it, you don't have to ask for permission or KYC for everything. But to acquire it in the first place, you have to do the same stuff you do with the banks. And that's what I don't like. I don't trust the banks, but I trust payment processors and exchanges even less.

Use an ATM. Usually just requires a phone number, which could be a burner phone.
