I got some nasty heel pain a few months ago and thought it might be bone spurs. The analysts did find some bone spurs, but not on my heel (on my metatarsals, which don't hurt). Also they diagnosed me with "pes plaus" (flat feet) as if I didn't know. So my heel pain remains a mystery, but it has lessened since I ditched my Merrell sandals for Birkenstocks.
