Q:

You’ll recall I republished a column Friday from the Kansas Reflector that was critical of Facebook’s ad policy on climate change and the link to which was blocked across Meta platforms on Thursday.

As soon as I posted the link to my republished version of the column on Threads (Meta’s version of Twitter), it was taken down and flagged as a violation of community standards on cybersecurity. Shortly thereafter, all links to my site were blocked on all Meta platforms, and anyone who’d ever posted a story of mine received an alert that the link had been taken down due to that same cybersecurity violation. The same thing happened to the Reflector the day before, as I reported.

Thanks for sharing, these incidents are very important to keep people educated on. I’m observing censorship on TikTok when trying to post mainstream news coverage and other creators are having their funds limited or denied for reporting mainstream news topics. The problem is when people are silenced and others are none the wiser.

Exactly. It's deeply chilling and it underscores the insane power of tech corporations over individuals.

You are so right... it is very unsettling to realize that we could be isolated into these little bubbles and literally have no idea what is really happening. I am reminded of the protests in France where when people on Instagram searched "France" they got all the happy tourist photos. But many were talking about it on Tiktok. It was also suppressed by mainstream news for a bit so if you weren't on Tiktok, you would have no idea that a significant part of the world was on fire.

To now see suppression on Tiktok too means we could be flying in the dark very soon - which is why it is incredible that Nostr exists. I'm new here but am very impressed with the crowd.

I also saw a news article shared here about Facebook removing the "news" tab. It is very interesting timing with the forced take over of TikTok and recent suppression across many apps. I'm not sure what to make of it, but it feels like a global positioning of suppression to make sure chaos is not reported. This is similar to what happened with the train derailments in Ohio and Maui fires. These events popped off quickly on Tiktok but then suddenly went unreported around the first series of Tiktok banning conversations where TikTok was forced to run the data through Oracle servers in Texas. I'm not sure how it all interlinkes together but it feels concerning at a deep level that is hard to explain.
