Proof-of-Work consensus by difficulty retargeting (aka Nakamoto consensus) works both in theory and in practice. Other forms of consensus devolve to politics, both in theory and in practice.

Checkpointing is bad for Bitcoin irrespective of who recommends it.

You may be right, but I'm going with satoshi here, you've given no argument to say why satoshi was wrong

Heuristics show us that large reorgs dont happen by accident, they are attacks, so we should aim to remove that class of attacks

Bitcoin works in practice today because ~$15 of electricy protects every transaction. That protection will eventually decrease.
