"There is no sex in the USSR"
TV presenters Vladimir Pozner and Phil Donahue organized one of the first Soviet-American teleconferences of the Glasnost era, which was directed by Vladimir Mukusev, recorded on June 28 and aired on July 17, 1986.
During the conversation, an American participant in the teleconference asked a question.
The truth about this phrase can only be found out by watching the recording of the program. The American, as Posner said, asked whether sexual motives were used in Soviet advertising. Lyudmila Ivanova answered: “There is no sex in the USSR, and we are categorically against it...” Then laughter is heard in the hall and Posner removes the microphone from Ivanova. However, you can read her lips as she adds: “... on television.” - This is one of the versions.
In an interview (Was there sex in the USSR?, Komsomolskaya Pravda, November 1, 2004), she outlines her version of the origin of this phrase:
“In general, a teleconference began, and one American woman said: because of the war in Afghanistan, you should stop having sex with your men altogether - then they won’t go to war. And she kept pointing her finger. I answered her: there is no sex in the USSR ", and there is love. And during the Vietnam War, you also did not stop sleeping with your men." But everyone only remembered the beginning of the phrase. What, am I wrong? In our country, the word “sex” was actually almost indecent. We always made love, not sex. That's what I meant."
