I saved and am re using 2x4s from the soffit ... can you see a difference with the new wood?

Genetically engineered trees grow faster than they did 40-50 years ago so the rings are thicker. It also depends on the climate or region.

Yah for sure but they also warp and aren't as strong or so my contractor buddy says

He's correct. It's because of how fast they grow.
