I'm going to stop you right there and say that the field of science has been based on money for at least the last 40 years.

but i think it's a bit less so in more left-leaning countries since the governments takes more responsibility for funding science there, and big business doesn't dominate as much.
i'd trust science coming out of northern Europe more than science coming out of America.
