From the Chimp Haven sanctuary:
One of the sweetest things about retirement at Chimp Haven is a life lived in large chimp social groups, and as the chimps age, we get to see just how important these friendships are.
Phyllis is one of our "Golden Oldies" and although her buddy, Julius, is the alpha of the group, Phyllis has always been behind the scenes taking care of things and making sure everyone is where they're supposed to be. Now that Phyllis is losing her eyesight, her groupmates are repaying her kindness and showing her the same care she's shown them for years.
"Lil Rose and Phyllis were inside together and it was time for breakfast," shared Animal Care Coordinator Awbrea. "Lil Rose got Phyllis's attention by panting and mouthing, then escorted her through the door with soft touch and continued to coax her outside. It was so sweet, because Lil Rose was trying to hurry to breakfast but did not want to start without Phyllis."
Where would be be without our friends? All the pant-hoots to Phyllis's chimp friends and her human caregivers who are so dedicated to ensuring she has the best support in her senior years. 💚
