-THE BITCOIN ISLAND LIFE-

Did you know Florence Walton and Maurice Mouvet were credited with bringing the tango to NYC?
So who were they? In the early 1910s, Walton and Mouvet were among the most celebrated ballroom dancers in America. Known for their elegance and control, they helped introduce tango to elite audiences—polishing a dance that originated in the working-class neighborhoods of Buenos Aires, shaped by African, Indigenous, and European traditions. Sensual, improvised, and emotionally expressive, tango stood in stark contrast to the formal ballroom styles favored by high society.
When the dance arrived in New York by way of Paris in 1911, it shocked reformers. Critics called it indecent. Moves like cortes and quebradas—marked by sudden dips, leg brushes, and swaying hips—challenged elite expectations of propriety. But in many immigrant and working-class communities, close dancing was already an expressive part of everyday life. Walton and Mouvet helped bring tango into the mainstream, but its essence as a social and emotional form of connection remained.
