what is the purpose of off-grid living ?

you don't need to go off grid to have solar, batteries, generator or anything else.

reminds me of a home on Build show on YouTube that had like a 35 KW Tesla roof, 10 Tesla Powerwalls, Two Generators ... and that was on top of like 400A grid service.

i would rather be paid by the grid for excess Solar capacity than be left without power after a hail storm.

Fragility, in Taleb's sense of the word. And money.

If you're still grid-connected, you're still paying "service charges", a majority of the cost of electricity here.

And whilst notionally you can get paid for feed-in to the grid, in practice its a govt-regulated oligopsony. Here, feed-in tariffs were recently lowered by decree to 1c per kW/h.

A majority of solar systems here are "grid-tied", so if the grid goes out, you go out. I've never seen a transfer switch in this country, I should check the AU Standard but I believe they're as good as illegal, even though very common in Asia.

Off-grid is simply better.

If you're worried about hail, screen with pvc-coated wire mesh. You'll lose maybe 5% peak. Or do what I do and keep spare panels behind the shed.

I lived off grid for many years without electricity. With the right kind of circumstances it is simple and pleasant. It offers independence.

Taleb is a retard.

Like Fukuyama, his (early) books are significantly greater than he is.

IDK how this happens. I'm guessing the brainrot stems from wanting to be liked.

Plus, the power goes out pretty frequently around here but it doesn't affect me 🤷

I also have low electricity needs, so a fairly small system is enough for me.

Give your next hurricane a kiss from me

i love Hurricanes almost as much as nostr:npub1sglevphkxd3nqjek3tz3hrx9fvtg0v3g9exuyk3wggtusw8gn0ys8rseau loves Tariffs !

I'm looking at purchasing the rural doomstead I've always wanted, and the property I'm negotiating for would be $40k for a pole and wire. No way!

you had me at "doomstead"
