From the official web of the Nobel Prize:

"In conjunction with its tercentenary celebrations in 1968, Sveriges Riksbank (the central bank of Sweden) instituted a new award, “The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel”"

So basically a central bank created a Nobel prize to give awards to other central bankers or anyone that aligns with their policies. How convenient.
