Why do Americans have HOA? Do you not own your house then? I can do whatever I want on my property.

Other side of the HOA coin is that you are a group of people voluntarily choosing a small form of self-governance, as well as co-ownership and maintenance of property.

The problem is that egos get involved and people are expected to shoulder the burden of doing all the work for no pay and all the liability.

HOAs are a tool, and mostly a useful one. But regulation and litigation have fucked up the incentives so much, they can't be used effectively.

Every HOA is just a bunch of pompous assholes who think they are better than everyone who isn’t in their specialty club community.

Not every one. I work in the industry. There are plenty of board members that do it to be productive and helpful. Those HOAs just chug along with minimal drama.

It's when someone gets on a board to feel important and wield some kind of power over their neighbors that they go wrong.

Depends …

I lifed in an edition with 13 homes. Huge lake. It got red tide. Not everyone wanted to contribute to clean it.

No big deal? Maybe? πŸ€”

We purposely bought a home Not in an HOA. Hate them!

We rent via real estate taxes and HOA dues. πŸ‘ŽπŸ’œ
